If you could only take your steel and vol pedal and only one box (preamp, amp sim, speaker sim, basic effects) what would be your choice for an authentic "live amp" sound?

Can any get a solid state sesion 400 or clean powerful steel guitar amp mode? These are ll mainly for guitar players that like tube amps?

edit: found this and do you have samples? I do use the Walker setup live now:
"With a bit of adjustment I can quicky get the same tones the real amps produce and with some mid range and EQ tweaks match them up real well with a Nashville 400, Webb 6-14-E, Fender Steel King or even a Walker Stereo Steel. I mention the Walker because you can use the dual outputs to feed two separate amps and get a super wide stereo sound."

| I have used the Quilter Phantom Block with a Boss DD-8 delay. It has an xlr out, gain, tone, and master volume. It’s limited in the ability to EQ but I used it heavily for direct jobs before assembling my pedalboard with the Boss GT1000 core and Walrus Canvas stereo di. Now it’s for backup in the seat. |

Looks like Quilter make other "blocks", too ! |

| I just needed to solve this issue for a 6 string silent stage gig. I went with the Quilter phantom block for price/size. Sounds great for 6 string but can’t get a good sound with it with my GFI. Does anybody have any good settings for it? |

Bob, here's a link to a very small Quilter, 25 watt SS "pedal" amp... with some cab sim, and a XLR out.

Over the last year I have used a Quilter Tone Block 202, in a TT-15 cab... and it has a real nice direct out too. Just recently purchased the smaller "Super Block", and so far have only used it through a 1-12" cab.... but wow, it sounds as good as the larger 200 watt Quilter block! I will be trying it through a PA this week, and will post back my results.
I noticed you're in San Jose... might go to a brick and mortar store and test drive some of these Quilters... I am getting nice comments from the sound techs at my gigs.

Wow, my whole band schedule changed, and I never got the chance to try my new Quilter Super Block amp through the PA.... but if I had to say, I would go for the Tone Block 202, for the added amps.....
I've now used it on stage about 25 times... sound guys just love the direct out, with speaker simulation.

My recent foray with the Strymon Iridium and NUX Solid Studio was similar. Tele sounds right, steel not so much. I play with someone who works at Fractal, and he mentioned a buddy of his who is out on tour playing steel with some major Nashville act (I forget whom), and does everything through a Fractal modeler. So maybe the high powered (i.e., more expensive) stuff does the job better than these low to mid priced pedals.
My adage has always been Tone=Weight. Maybe I need to to switch to Tone=Money. |
