Hey all, I’m having some trouble getting some changes on my 1973 MSA d12 to play smoothly. Has anybody out there made a complete rodding chart for an MSA with double raises and double lowers?

B0b (rest in peace) made this one for e9 which is very helpful.

Does anyone have one for c6 changes that they’d be willing to share? I tried to make my right knee levers work on the c6 neck and this where I created problems for myself (C->B; A->A#). Also, If anybody has a rodding chart for the (often on RKR) Eb-> + E, F#s -> ++ G# change for this type of MSA, I'd love to see those.

I understand that every copedent on every guitar will be slightly different, but if somebody has a rodding chart to share that might help me get started.

I also found a lot of helpful information on these threads:

My 74 MSA D12 is still set up stock on both necks.

You can view the original manual at the link below, it has charts for the D12 and others. Hope that helps...but if you need any other "default" settings, let me know.

Hey joe, thanks for sharing. I've looked at this manual before but didn't see a chart of which holes in the bell crank and which holes in the changer the cross rods were set in at the factory for each change. Am I overlooking something?

Ben,
I have a 1974 MSA D12, 9 pedal, 5 knee's.
I made the copedent and rod chart before I tore it down to do some changer work.
I believe it to be as originally installed, it works perfect for me as it is.
Below is the setup I have.
Hope this will do some good for you.
Good luck.

Good Luck setting the guitar up.

Do you know if the changers have been tore down, Cleaned and checked in the last few years.

Working on a 1973 MSA can turn into a drawn out project. A couple months ago, I went through the set up of MSA Classic D10 2C4331, I wanted to sell. Could not get several raises and lowers to work properly.

I jokingly say, "I had to give the guitar Its 50 Year Bath".

I had to pull both changers. The changer was full of Black goop from later years lube. Then it had a dried tan lube that I had to scrape and steel wool to get to bare metal.

Once I got the changer cleaned, Found a couple tight rivets in the scissors, Had to be worked on, All raises and lowers set up easy, except 1.
Had trouble with the 10th string C to A lower on C6th neck and it was a Non MSA Lower return spring causing the problem.

Double Good Luck if you have to pull the changers.

Bill, that is exactly what I was hoping for!! thank you so much for sharing your rodding chart.

Bobby, I have no idea when the changer was last cleaned. It could very well be gunked up. Here's what little I know about the guitar:

I think I may be the third owner, bought it from a collector guy 2 years ago, he never played it, had it sitting in a case for about 30 years, within the last 10 years he paid a friend's friend do some work on it in Portland, he had no memory of what that work included.

I'm hoping that work included a full teardown and clean out of the changer! Not something I feel confident doing yet myself. This is also my only steel, so I'd hate to have it sitting on the bench for that long.

Yes, agreed on the gratitude for the rodding chart.

Ben....you can do it! I gave myself 2 days to go through mine and my only advice is to take note of all the disassembly steps with photos along the way. Definitely helped me made sure I got things back together.
