I just bought a lovely Remington Steel D10. I'm new to Steel and the previous owner didn't know the tuning, etc.
I tuned neck 1 to A6, which I heard was how Remington played.
Neck 2 was strung "backwards" and is very out of tune. I would like to reverse the setup and am not sure which tuning to use. Does anyone have suggestions or recommendations?

How is the 10 string A6th on there spelled? And what do you mean the strings are backwards in the other neck? All of them, or some of them?
I could be wrong but I think Herb used F#13th (hi-to-lo) E C# G# E A# F# d# f# on his third neck on Fenders, but later dropped it when he downsized to double necks.
He would tune his A string on A6th to G# for a similar sound on double necks.
Later, using double necks, I think he used E13th (but I am not sure).
I personally think E13th is one of the best compliments for A6th.
On 8 strings I use “Vance Terry’s E13th”: E C# B G# F# D B G#
Some 10 string E13th tunings I’ve thought about:
G# F# E C# B G# F# D B E
(Tommy Morrell)
E C# B G# F# E D B G# E
(Middle E, I personally think it gets in the way)
d E C# B G# F# D B G# E
(My choice, since on 8, I often retune my E13 to an E9thE D B G# F# D B G#)
G# E C# B G# F# D B G# E
(Seems like a great choice, can play anything with this)
d# E C# B G# F# D B G# E
(reentrant major 7th, do d# on top)
E C# B G# F# D B G# E B
( fat low B like 7th string of guitar)
G# E C# B G# E C# A F# D
(An extended Don Helms tuning! Looks super lush) |

The vast majority of non pedal steel instruction is in C6. So I would have one neck tuned C6

For the other Neck:
I would recommend an E9 tuning

My rational for the E9 is that with it the tuning there is the E major (G#EBG#EB), E7 (EBG#EDB), and the Don Helms-Little Roy Wiggins E13 with one string out of sequence. C#G#EBG#EDB. For both tunings, the strings are positioned the identically to the standard pedal steel setup so if you want to progress to pedals everything will be in the same spot. |

Thanks, Paul. That's almost how I ended up having it set up. Instead of C6, I kept the A6.
