I can't really tell from the videos what is happening there.T The 8th string is on the same lever as the 4th and it seems to have ample travel so that rules out lever stop issue to me.
Wish I could get my actual eyes and hands on it. It's just geometry, physics and mechanics. There has to be a logical explanation for this issue. |

ShoBuds seemed to have had their share of this problem w the lowering scissor tab wearing into the changer finger- fairly easily fixed but frustrating nonetheless. Barring an obstruction to the lowering scissor or changer finger, I would loosen the string and remove the return spring and simply feel the lowering scissor move. If the raise scissor comes with it I would add lubrication between the two and make sure the other posts don't apply- hanging rivet between the 2, etc. It should be able to be diagnosed in less than 5 minutes. |
Isn't he talking about a Derby?

I just bought a Derby SD10 which needs a few adjustments. |
Probably same issues are possible though.[/quote] _________________ Carter D10 8p/8k, Dekley S10 3p/4k C6 setup,Regal RD40 Dobro, Recording King Professional Dobro, NV400, NV112,Ibanez Gio guitar, Epiphone SG Special (open D slide guitar) . Playing for 54 years and still counting. |

Yeah, I think the diagram I posted is a Bud. The Derby is a little simpler design. I was just attempting a general depiction of how an all pull changer operates.
I don't have an actual pic of the Derby changer scissors, but I think it's more like this MSA design that Darvin posted back when.

Every older Classic I take apart, I make sure there is a notch cut for clearance for the raise tab on the scissor. I have an S12 apart now that has 11 scissors without the relief, and one with the relief. I had problems with one of the first Classics I re-built raising the first string a whole step, so I notch them all now while they are apart. This was a design flaw, and corrected on the later Classics.
You can see the notch on the part on the left.

Still, every symptom points to that split screw adjustment or an obstruction in the changer. If not that, I'm sort of out of ideas. Good Luck. |

Darvin's point about the MSA scissors is well taken and way easier to fix when the pair of scissors is out of the guitar- however that particular fix is to remedy the the inability to raise far enough w/o the raise scissor contacting the lower scissor. I am aware that this problem is on a Derby and I've never seen a Derby changer have the same problem as the ShoBud which I assume has softer metal in use allowing for the wear. |

I guess I shouldn't have posted the photo of the Sho-Bud scissors. I was just trying to show the basics of how a split or riveted scissors operate in an all pull system and I stated the Derby was not the same. I just didn't take the time to make my own drawing.
I've stood and watched Charlie assemble those fingers and changers in his shop on ocassion while chewing his ear about steel guitars and players, but I could not draw an exact example.
I wasn't making a parallel between the MSA scissors issue and the Derby issue. I was just putting up a photo of a type finger that might be closer to the Derby's system. I guess I should have edited out the text....or just quit nibbling...
Sorry if I introduced any confusion...🤪 |

Hi All,
Thanks for the assistance! The guitar did sit for a few years un-played, so it could very well just need some lubrication on the grommet. I am going to get into it tonight and will let everyone know the results.
Thanks again for all the good advice! |
