I left steel guitar in 2001 when moving and going thru some family things.
I came back to it only a few years ago.
I am wondering what the main effects unit now is, since the ProFEX is now rather an antique?

JD,
The whole multiFX rack unit thing pretty much went away. A small pedalboard that can be exactly what you need. Plus it is easy dig in deep and experiment with individual stomp boxes. The other trend is in modeling gear. There has been major developments there. You could find presets to do anything with that stuff at studio quality bit rates. The level of flexibility and sonic quality is absolutely astonishing with either system.
A profex is sorta like a blackberry compared to the latest iPhone. They were pretty amazing 30 years ago ....

I always felt that having a rack unit for an instrument was a bit over-ego... but then I have a rather large one, so I had and somewhat enjoyed it.
I can't say that I am big on this amp modeling (imitation) stuff, even though our keyboards are all digital and I just bought a Crumar Mojo "kind'a B3"-imitation organ with bass pedals and we're amazed at the quality.
The problem with amp modeling seems to be that they really quite well replicate the voicings of past and historic GUITAR amps, which in most cases were way too "nasal" for PSG, the reason we all seem to cut mids outta everything.
I got a few stomp boxes from "way" back when I wasn't so OLD, Bob but I don't like the clutter.
Oh well... "PROGRESS"... we get more and more "bang for the buck" and less to be really creating our own stuff. Even HomeDepot is more about selling "cool" garbage than material to just BUILD.
And now I sounded old.

| Lots of options but many are returning to a simple delay and reverb pedal. The modeling pedals are often a rabbit hole looking for the right tone and trying improve. I should know by the heap of previous modeling pedals and effects units I own. My latest is the Boss pocket GT and the GT1. They sound good and have lots of features but if programming is a problem for you, it's definitely got a learning curve. |

I'm not into the modeling stuff but there are amazing developments that transcend recreations. I'm more of an old school guy. I like tube amps and went back to stomp boxes. The thing is the stomp boxes are in general WAY BETTER now. I think the small builder hand made tube amps are better than vintage also overall.

The other item worth mentioning is repair availability and cost. Its very hard to find a shop that will work on the rack mount units.
I currently have a TC Electronics G Major 2 that I have not
been able to get repaired. The last shop I called had a recording stating they were no longer accepting units due to no parts availability. I guess they are pretty much throw away units.

Personally, I still really like the Peavey ProFex II and TransTube Fex units. Both have Jeff's presets. I find that the presets, developed specifically for the PSG, particularly useful. The TransTube Fex has direct outs that sound great for recording.
I have spent a lot of time climbing up the learning curve on a lot of gear and plug-ins. It was all fun and all the units could be dialed in for great PSG sounds. At the end of the day though, I keep coming back to the great sounds from the 1990's Peaveys.

I like reverb and tap tempo delay in my NUX Atlantic.
Chorus, Resonator Pedal, Fuzzy distortion.
I have it on a pedal board with a case to set it on.
