Hello Steelers,
Looking for some advice here.
Have a Vibroclone (AB763 Circuit) that recently had the Cesar Diaz mods (SS Rectifier and Tube Rectifier, used to be the ground switch, but has 3-pronged plug, so this has become the rectifier switch). The other mod was pulling V1 via an on/off pot on the Normal Channel’s volume knob.
So, tube rectifier is about 40 watts RMS/Continuous and the Solid State Rectifier is about 50 watts RMS/Continuous. I believe we can double these values when talking about Peak/Musical Power.
Currently, I have a JBL D130F 8 ohms. I believe this speaker is rated at 100 watts RMS/Continuous. Everything sounds great for 6-string in the Vibrato Channel and for the Emmons Legrande II in the Normal Channel. With the exception of the low end. I put my copedent below. You can see that my E7 tuning gets pretty low.
My Fender Twin 65 Reissue Custom 15 (85 watts and mystery Eminence Manufactured for Fender 4 Ohm Speaker, best PSG tube amp IMHO), sounds GREAT when doing low voiced chords, runs etc on the E7 neck. But the Vibroclone starts breaking up a little bit (not in a good way) when I dig in on some lower voiced chords on the E7 neck. It is not terrible but it is just enough to warrant a change.
Don’t want to damage the JBL D-130F. Plan will be to sell it or put it in a cabinet to run as an extension or get Milkman amp or head to use for only E9th or guitar.
So, looking for recommendations for a 15 inch 8 Ohm speaker that will sound good with 6-string and PSG in this Vibroclone (to dream the impossible dream, right?).
I have gone down the rabbit hole and looked at spec sheets and sound samples on the usual suspects: Jensens, Webers, Eminence, JBL etc. But looking for real world experience not the usual manufacture’s lexicon of terms that may or may not be accurate in regards to highs, mids and lows.

I use K130s in my 1964 Vibroverb, as good as it gets. The JBL delivers more volume per watt than any other speaker, twice the volume of many. It also has a wider, smoother bandwidth than the competition, a full octave higher than the Eminence "Special Design" attempt at copying the earlier JBL designs. I have played both and the JBL sounds better and is noticeably lighter. I have not tried the TT15, the Eminence neo I did try sounded decent but had not much juice in the highs, and was several dB quieter than the K130.
Does your D130f have its original gooped paper surround or has it at some point been reconed with the newer fabric surround of the K series? Neither should have a problem with that amp unless you are shredding with heavy distortion, but the later surround system is superior, particularly in delivering bottom end power.
There is no significant difference between D130f and K130 magnet structures, after the gap was initially widened with the "F" modification any increase in the power handling difference is all in the voice coil and surround.

John,
I've been told that Eminence will build you an EPS-15C at any resistance
you want...the closest thing I've heard to a D-130 yet...
You might call them...
Good luck,

You might also consider the Eminence Wheelhouse spkr. I'm using two 15" Wheelhouse 8 ohm. Randy Beavers is using Wheelhouse with his tube amp. _________________ 1976 Birdseye U-12 MSA with Telonics 427 pickup, 1975 Birdseye U-12 MSA with Telonics X-12 pickup, Revelation preamp, Carbon Copy Delay and Hall Of Fame Reverb, Crown XLS 1002, 2- 15" Eminence Wheelhouse speakers, ShoBud Pedal, Effects Pedals. 1949 Epiphone D-8. |

JBL E-130 is a great sounding speaker. Heavy, but very efficient. |

Should I be concerned with a re-cone? |
John YES; to be concerned. The original Alnico Magnet D and K series speakers "Re-cone Kits" have now been gone over 30 years; so Speaker techs use E series to Re-cone D and K series; or their homemade parts; and they don't sound ANYTHING like the original D and K series.
Yes find a K-130 8ohm original cone and it will be a DELIGHT and handle everything you throw at it as it is more wattage than the DF series>>close to 150w if I remember. I use two of them with my Fener Twin in separate cabs. It is what I recorded with on all the Dale Watson albums and Miss Leslie Albums and Weldon Henson Albums in the last almost 30 years...ALL ORIGINAL.

I've been through a lot of 12 and 15 inch speakers over the years and I have settled (X2) on the Eminence Paul Franklin for steel and guitar. Yes it is heavy but to my ears it is the cleanest, most natural sounding speaker out there. YMMV. _________________ Show Pro SD10 guitars
