Can somebody offer a good starting point to get augmented runs into my playing? Joaquin Murphey was, of course, a master of this.

Specifically, I'm looking for a way to think about when I might toss in an augmented lick, and a handy way to play it. I realize that you can often substitute a Vaug for a V7 (right?), but I hear aug going on in other parts of tunes on old recordings.

I guess one thing to work on is just a fast way to play a whole tone scale, and know where to play this, in a given key.

I found a nice thread about this already, but thought maybe some others might toss out some licks and positions.

I play 8 string C6, and E13, non pedal.

In the key of C, A7+5 is common (leading to D or Dm) because the raised 5th occurs naturally in the C scale. Singers like melodies that lie within the natural scale, even if the chords include accidentals. In this example the raised 5th of the A chord is the F note.

A common spelling for steel guitar would be F C# G (high to low).

Here are some places to fing it on E13:

E -- 13
C# -- 12
G# -- 11

or

F# -- 11
D -- 11
G# -- 11

or on C6:

E -- 1 ----- 13
C -- 1 ----- 13
G -- 0 ----- 12

The same statements apply to the E7+5 chord in the same key of C, if you move all the notes 5 frets higher or 7 frets lower.
