That's the theory. I'm not sure how long that shelf-life is. I try to keep mine in a controlled environment (a/c when required).
I'm retired now and I hope never to have to buy any more. I have dozens of sets and hundreds of singles stored here from when I'd get them provided. Occasionally, I'll see a slight tarnish on the unwound strings (some are 10+ years old) but there's no obvious ill-effect. The wound strings still sound bright when I first put them on, regardless of age. _________________ Roger Rettig: Emmons D10, B-bender Teles and Martins - and, at last, a Gibson Super 400!

Joe Wright once commented that spare strings in your pack seat after 18 months should be replaced. I think he was referring to the plain strings as they can oxidize in the paper sleeves. It may be different now with strings that are vacuum sealed in plastic sleeves. Humidity and dampness will deteriorate strings so try to store them in a dry space. _________________ I survived the sixties! |

It looks like the days of open packages and paper envelopes are going for some companies.
In the last year or so, Some of the string companies have changed their packaging. SIT Strings, Are packed a new way, Each string is sealed in a plastic envelope with a a corrosion inhibiter gas, Then the set is sealed in the outer package.
About a year ago I ordered SIT 12 Uni. strings from my supplier, I got one set of strings packed in the open package with paper envelopes, The other 5 was in the new packaging. My last order about 6 months ago was all packed in the new sealed packaging.
Not seen any rust or stains on strings with this new packaging.
An old habit I had was carry 1 set of strings and some extra 3rd and 5th strings. I wrote date of string change and switch set in seat every time I change strings. Kept strings in plastic zip lock with rust inhibiter at home. |

A very long time ago I bought A LOT of 6-string GHS Boomer sets when StewMac had a big sale, must have been at least 15 years ago and they only cost somewhere around 2.50 USD. I still have a few sets left, and they look and sound just fine, despite being packed in paper envelopes and a far from air-tight plastic bag. |

Just to add to my earlier remarks, while that slight tarnish on the plain strings isn't desirable, I can't honestly feel anything when I play them.
When I wasn't paying anything for them, I had a tendency to over-order and now I have more than I can foresee using. I can't justify spending more money on strings because of the alleged 'shelf life'..
Having said that, I have a new D13th guitar coming; maybe I will have to buy more! _________________ Roger Rettig: Emmons D10, B-bender Teles and Martins - and, at last, a Gibson Super 400!

I used to buy George L's by the dozen sets (I got a discounted price). When I first moved to Florida I was concerned about the humidity and the effect on the strings. I vacuum sealed each set with my wife's kitchen vacuum sealer. I did that for the first couple of years. I quit doing it and the strings still stayed fresh. With a lot of playing including some road work I was going through almost 2 dozen sets a year and I guess that was fast enough to not be affected by the Florida humidity.
With the demise of George L's strings I switched to SIT. Both the full set and each string are sealed so there is no concern about string deterioration. |

I used to buy a dozen sets at a time , no matter what brand, but after moving to Hawaii they would tarnish and/or rust in months even with the gels packs in a plastic storage box. Now I just get 2 sets at a time. When I order from Just Strings, I get sets for my steel , dobros and acoustics. One order, shipping usually $6.. _________________ Excel steels & Peavey amps,Old Chevys & Motorcycles & Women on the Trashy Side |
