I have loved this tune of Leon's... well, most of his stuff for a long time. I'm of an age so that I had the opportunity to become friendly with him , and I think he's been underappreciated as a player in the last couple of decades.
Anyway, here's a video of Leon and the Cimarron Boys performing it live onstage in Los Angeles back in the late 50's. Check the man's hands, both left and right.

Son, we live in a world with walls, and those walls have to be guarded by men with steel guitars. Who's gonna do it? You? You, Lt. Weinberg? |

The whole thing is superb and his left hand is extraordinary. I suppose all that hammer-on technique is equally applicable to the pedal instrument. Hmm... _________________ Make sleeping dogs tell the truth!

I agree that LM is a bit underrated. That is a pre-worked-out solo but he plays everything with perfect feel and timing. I dig that slightly distorted tone - kind of like a steel guitar version of Gretsch hollow body twang. He basically developed a whole approach to electric steel that was widely imitated and probably doesn't get enough credit for just how much of an impact he made. _________________ Steel Guitar Books! Thanks for sharing this great vintage clip.
I love how Leon sneaks in a quote from "Rhapsody In Blue". I'm going to have to find more of this footage. |
