I struggle with harmonics ( I cheat and just slide up and play the notes)
I want to break that habit in 2023 and do proper (ish) harmonics.
Are there any helpful videos explaining the technique/method?

You could take an online lesson. My harmonics got a LOT better from a lesson with Sebastian. Then get boss Maui Chimes tab.
That's all high bass A, though. Not sure if that's your tuning.

If you want to play chord harmonics of two notes or more, use the side of your palm. Your flesh touches the strings at a point either an octave or a perfect fifth above, and you pick and touch (and quickly remove) at the same time. Make sure you are right over the fret marker.
For single note artificial harmonics, I find the pinky knuckle (in actuality the middle phalange) to be most effective in getting clean, precise and ringing harmonics. You pick with your thumb (or any other finger, you can actually even play triplets) and touch the string with the middle phalange of your pinky, lifting quickly and moving to where you want your next note to be.
If you play with bare fingers, which I’ve been doing more and more, you can play artificial harmonics using the same technique as on guitar, with the tip of the index finger and the thumbpick behind. This is a pretty surefire way, since it is so visible.
It takes practice and even the best players miss once in a while.

On topic, I've never seen the picky technique before. I'll have to give it a go.

One trick that I learned from a Doug Beaumier post (which I can’t find) was to keep an eye on the fret space where your picking thumb strikes the string. Once you find the right spot for your palm, or ring finger, or whatever part of your hand is hitting the 12th fret above the bar, your picking thumb is like a GPS locator. You can pick any and every string and get a clear harmonic if you keep your thumb going in a straight line across the strings.
I have not seen this concept demonstrated in a video, otherwise I would have posted a link. Kinda hard to make the idea clear with words only. |
