All three of those breaks are HOT!
The camera angle on the steel is amazing! You can see the volume pedal, tone knob and the entirety of the fretboard. Such a treat to see what he's doing.

(I've only seen videos of Thumbs' playing with Roger Miller before. It's so fun to watch him play. And weird that he didn't play the steel considering how he played the guitar.) |

Check out 2:18 in the first (Bowers) video, where you can see the steeler's face. While it's Curly's quad, it sure doesn't look like him.
Speedy, maybe? Certainly sounds like his style. |

That’s a different band, Jim. They usually had two. Ray Noren was often in the other band, which was led by Grady Martin. This was not that band, though.

| Great playing by Curly Chalker and he's playing the first song in Speedy West style. His bar movement and use of the controls is in Speedy West style. Speedy left Springfield Missouri in 1946 and by the time The Ozarks Jubilee television shows were rolling nationwide, Speedy West and Jimmy Bryant were tearing it up out in California. Not taking nothing away from Curly Chalker. In fact, I am a Big Fan of both of those Master Steel Guitarists. Both were Super and two of my heroes. I knew Speedy West really well and live only 10 miles up the road from the Farm place he grew up on near Springfield Missouri. Curly and Thumbs Carlisle are on several old Ozark Jubilee television clips. Check them out! Thanks for sharing this! |

| Several famous Steel Guitarists played on The Ozarks Jubilee television shows in the 1950s. Some of them were there at different times with various singers. These are some I'm aware of Bud Isaacs, Jerry Byrd, Billy Robinson, Jimmy Day, Doc Martin, Curly Chalker and I'm sure there were several others. They would come in with guest artists like Jim Reeves, Red Foley, George Morgan, Billy Walker and many other singers. Hershel Speedy Haworth was a regular Guitarist as well as Guitarist greats Thumbs Carlisle, Chet Atkins, Jerry Menown and others. I was born in 1955 but Keith Hilton of Hilton Pedals and others were a little older than I, and they can fill y'all in better on those great shows. |
