I am working on a Carter guitar that needs two extra pull rods with threads... they are 3/32 , and for love of God, I can not find 3/32 die anywhere ... I am thinking 3/32 pull rod may be cut from the welding rod, but nobody, nowhere sells 3/32 dies to cut the threads on the rods...does anyone knows where in the world can I get 3/32 die and rod?...thanks...getting pretty frustrated here... _________________ www.steelguitarsonline.com |

I bought 3/32 welding rod from Amazon, but any welding supply shop should have them. The pronlem is bending the hooks. I chose to use the brass barrels that fit into the bellcranks and have the socket head cap screw to clamp onto the rods.
I use a 4-40 die to thread my rods. _________________ Carter D10 8p/8k, Dekley S10 3p/4k C6 setup,Regal RD40 Dobro, Recording King Professional Dobro, NV400, NV112,Ibanez Gio guitar, Epiphone SG Special (open D slide guitar) . Playing for 54 years and still counting. |

Richard isn't 4/40 die too big to thread 3/32 rod? where did you get those brass barrels with cap screws at? thanks for your help bud _________________ www.steelguitarsonline.com |

I think 3-56 fine or 3-48 coarse is the optimum die size for .093 [3/32]rods, but I've threaded a bunch of them using a 4-40 die same as Richard with no problems and you can use it on Emmons legrande size rods too. but any of these sizes should work ok.
Most good tool supply shops should have these size dies. Lowes and Home Depot sometimes or can order them in for you in a few days.
I found 3/32 rods 3 ft. long at the local hobby shop.
The guys at your local steel guitar stores may be able to help you out too.
You can probably order them threaded from Michael Yahl at www.psgparts.com if you have time etc. |

It is a 4-40 that I use. I got those barrels from Al Brisco. They were $6 each, but he has a $40 minimum. But he could also make you a rod. That might be a better way to go seeing as how you are going to resell it. _________________ Carter D10 8p/8k, Dekley S10 3p/4k C6 setup,Regal RD40 Dobro, Recording King Professional Dobro, NV400, NV112,Ibanez Gio guitar, Epiphone SG Special (open D slide guitar) . The Carter rods are stainless, not tool steel as in the McMaster-Carr link. If you can get a rod that matches what is in the guitar, your end customer will probably appreciate it. The screws in the barrels stick out the side and can be a pain to keep out of the way of other rods. I couldn't fing the right set screws to replace the screws though.
Do you know what length rods you need? I have some rods with the bend that I took out of the guitar. If I have them, I'll send them to you. Even if I have a rod that is longer, you can cut it down and rethread it. I've done this too.
Let me know. _________________ Carter D10 8p/8k, Dekley S10 3p/4k C6 setup,Regal RD40 Dobro, Recording King Professional Dobro, NV400, NV112,Ibanez Gio guitar, Epiphone SG Special (open D slide guitar) . Playing for 54 years and still counting. |

4-40 is the size. Damir I can make you a couple. The trick is the stainless 3/32 rod. There are two alloys and only one is machinable. Let me know the length and I can make them. The bend is also a trick. I made a tool. You could trade me a leg bag or something if you want or whatever you seem like a good dude. |

A bending fixture can be made by drilling a 3/32" hole at a 2-degree angle in a small block of steel. It sounds crude, but you use a hammer to get a crisp bend in the rod for the hook. The fixture doesn't have to be heat-treated for just doing a couple rods. I do a lot of rods, so I used S-7 tool steel and had the fixture heat treated. I also have the bottom portion of each hole bottom-tapped for an adjustment screw. That way I can get consistent hooks from one rod to the next. The holes were "drill-reamed" at .096"....that's why the 2-degree angle.
I buy 308 stainless TIG-welding rod at a local welding supply store. It takes bending very well and doesn't rust. I groove the end of the rod before bending as I use rotor clips (aka E-clips or C-clips)to hold the rods onto the cranks.

Use a #4-40 threading die on the 3/32" rod. #3-48 is way too small and will most likely strip out. Also, no one makes nylon tuners with a hole small enough to accommodate a #3-48.

Hi Richard, how long should the threads be on the 3/32 rods? Thank you

The length of threads on rods seems to vary from 1 guitar to another. Some designs has a deep hole in the Nylon tuner and the Rod's threads are threaded completely into the nut. Some guitars designs have a spacer between the Nylon Tuning Nut and the Changer fingers. Old MSA Classic design has about 1 1/4" Aluminum spacer sleeves, GFI uses about 3/8" plastic spacer sleeve on their rods.
You don't want the rods threads exposed and dragging where the rod goes through the changer finger. It can cause pull and return problems. |

When you get down in the 3-48, 4-40, 5-40 size rods it is near a crap shoot for the actual size of the threads you will get , Rolled threads will be larger than the size of rod. You about have to thread and measure to get the right size threads.
The welding rod I use to make my GFI rods out of, Is Stainless Steel 3/32 welding rod, It measures .095, When I thread it with a non adjustable Craftsman 4-40 die, The threads measure .102.
It is funny how gummy Stainless Steel welding rod will move metal and threads will be larger than the bare rod. |

The Carter rods did have rolled threads. As Bobby said, they are not as crisp looking and vary a bit in diameter. I would go with 4/40 as I think it would get you closer to the factory rods. You can also buy adjustable dies. |
