Years ago, I was watching Nashville Now. Leon Redbone was a guest and had a fellow playing old-style steel in his group at that time. Anyone know who he was?

Thanks, Marvin

It might have been John Ely.

Marvin: I never saw the Nashville Now episode, and don't know how many years ago you're talking about, but I know Chris Whitely and his brother Ken made some TV appearances with Redbone 'way back when. Was the player you refer to playing a National tricone?

John Ely is touring with Asleep At The Wheel this summer.

You can also see and hear him (in a more informal setting) this fall at the Hawaiian Steel Guitar Association's (HSGA) Joliet, Illinois convention, October 3-5. John is this year's guest of honor.

Thanks guys...For the record, he was not playing a lap steel or resonator. It looked to be a non-pedal Bigsby-type unit. Since the general consensus is that it was John Ely, does he have any cd's out?

Thanks again,
Marvin

I have one of his records that credits Leon McAuliffe on steel - could have been him?

Paul...

Which album is that? I never knew Leon backed him up...

I've seen Cindy Cashdollar play "dobro" behind him before...I think on the Tonight Show...
