Spotify released Basic Pitch. Basic Pitch is a lightweight python script that automatically transcribes polyphonic audio to midi. It is free and open source.

You can use it in your browser without having to go online. Also it's not supposed to be a cpu hog. They say it works best with string instruments, then vocals and then pianos.

Understand to play it back you need a sound module. MIdi does not have any "sounds" in it, It simply ends instructions it sends to a MIDI sound module that plays back those instructions using its stored sounds. Computer sound cards usuly have some sounds stored.

Before you go down this path spend some time studying General MIDI.
