If you can find it, check out Clinton Gregory's "If It Weren't For Country Music I'd Go Crazy" album on Step One. Wall to wall Buddy pedal steel and Brent Mason electric guitar. And Clinton is a great fiddler as well.

While missing my son who was a Marine officer in Quantico, Va I played the Christmas in Virginia quite often. I was always a Clinton fan earlier but at the time that song was special.
Buddy’s tone to me superlative and also his perfect note selection throughout. There aren’t enough words to describe the great Buddy Emmons.

Brent could be the most technically accomplished guitarist I've ever heard so it's ironic that I used 'conventional'. I meant, of course, that Redd can be a bit 'out there' - in an exciting and refreshing way; I love his audacity - whereas Brent Mason's command of the instrument is such that he seems to excel in every field and genre.
I met him only once (at '3rd & Lindsey') and asked how he had approached his studies. He told me that he'd listened to everyone from Chet to Tal Farlow and had endeavoured to perfect each one's signature techniques. That gave him an enormous 'bag of tools' and took him where he deserves to be.
Buddy, though: his instincts were always so right, somehow, and we know how hard he had worked to master the instrument.
I have the Emmons Christmas CD in my car yet again and, yesterday, I was driving along and marveling at his cleaner-than-clean right-hand on 'Sleigh Ride'. What a player he was!!! |

Not only is Mr. Gregory a monster talent, he had the good humor and the fur to name his tour band “The Swingin’ Johnsons”. They were great! If I had the chops, that would be the guy I’d want work for.

Roger, don't want to stray too far off the BE topic, but if you are a Brent fan and you don't have his Hot Wired CD, you might want to find it. It's from '97 so may be out of print, but I think it's still available on iTunes through his website. His hot stuff like the title cut will knock your socks off and he does everything from chicken pickin' to mellow gut string stuff. There's also a nice complement of A listers including our hero Paul Franklin burning it up too.

Thanks, Jerry, but I've had that since it first appeared. In the same conversation, I asked if he'd contemplated doing a second project but he said:' 'Hot Wired' only sold 20,000 - I doubt anyone will get behind another album'. As you say, it fully displays his command of genres and we get a glimpse of his musical tastes which, like Emmons, have to extend to jazz.
20, 000 would represent enormous sales of a steel CD, however good it might be and whoever it featured.
I apologize for slightly diverting Darrell's thread: I enjoyed it enormously and may well buy the CD if I can find it. The musicianship all round is as good as it gets. |
