It seems to me that once the positions become ingrained it goes way beyond passing chords in that you would have many more positions or pockets to create colorful licks. I've pretty much been a key centered basic position player. I've long been aware of dim and aug chords but have never used them that much and it never occurred to me to use them for licks. Same with substitutions.

Learn to view the diminsihed as a rootless 7b9 and your musical life might unlock some Idea Very Happy creativity and understanding. It made so many puzzlepiecies fall in the right place once I realized what this ment.

Any of those 4 notes found in the diminished can be lowered a haftone to become the root.

The diminsihed associated with an E7 would be a G#dim not Fdim even tho G#dim and Fdim share the same notes. The notes function differently.

In fact there can be a lot to be gained by viewing/hearing diminished, halfdiminished and augmented voicings from the "3rd" of a given chord compared to viewing those(diminished, halfdiminished and augmented) as root type chords.

Take a little time to absorb how these positions allow for smooth movement between inversions of the two chords shown. It might come in handy sooner or later.

Right Bengt. In other words...

Raising the root of a dom7 chord 1/2 step gives it the same type of voicing as a diminished seventh chord. All the intervals are minor 3rds. Paul may be playing F°7 in the video, but it is functioning as E7b9 because his intention is to resolve to A.

So when does a diminished seventh chord function as something other than a V7b9 that wants to resolve to I?

Try this, in whatever voicing you can conjure up on your steel:
C/// C°7/// Dm7/// G7///

It’s just C°7 in that context.

Hey Scott, as the originator of the thread I believe you have the ability to go back and edit the title. I’m surprised that I’m the first to mention it - you apparently didn’t proofread and it came out as “demolished” chords. Laughing
