Steel guitar pack seat

I am thinking about building my own seat. Have access to the tubing and a neighbor to bend it. A cousin who is an upholsterer and I am handy at the woodworking. I need dimensions, type of wood, name of material for covering, etc. A rough sketch would be nice.Has anybody out there done it and do you recommend doing it?

some hours, about $60

at my size and very confortable...

Now that's my kind of ingenuity!

I've been meaning to build myself a seat for some time. I've got the skill I just haven't really gotten around to it yet.

I'm still trying to find a supplier for flightcase hardware (aluminium angle, handles, hinges, clasps etc) in the U.K.

The only one I've found online lists no prices and they ahven't responded to any of my emails requesting a price list to accompany their online catalogue.

Does anyone have a good source?

Mike can do you a seat for a very competative price. He is based in Swansea. I have one of his seats and it is as good as anything I've seen from the States without the VAT, import duty and high freight cost.

I've think I've seen one of Mike's seats, and from what I remember they are very good.
Right now though I can't really afford it.
Besides, I always get more enjoyment out of building something myself.

Lyle, for the seat cushion I suggest you locate some motorcylce seat foam like W.C. Edgar used on "steelseats". I presume Thom Beeman continues to use the same material. Very comfortable, and you can ride it all day with no saddle sores

That's for the plug Kenny, only it' not motorcycle foam, but has the same consistency of it. Your right ride all day and no saddle sores.

They look cheaper than some of the suppliers over here. While they don't stock everything I need to comeplete my PSG case refurb project they do seem to have everything needed for my seat project.

I must say though that it's stretching my memory of French a little.

They don't seem to have an English translation of the website but I'm getting by

I finally got a reply from the other company I was looking at. www.penn-elcom.com

They are actually pretty well priced and have a huge selection.

Customers in the U.S. can obtain 95% of the total range.
Obviously I don't know what their pricing in the US is like but I'd recommend a look for anyone contemplating a home build seat or flight case.

For me, a home build has got to be the only choice. The hardware parts will cost me just under £30 + delivery. Then I need to source plywood (easy £10-£15) and legs (fairly easy).
The only things left to find are a suitable "flight case" type laminate for the ply and upholstry for the cusion.

I would think all inclusive of no more than £80 for a sturdy ATA type seat - All edges protected with Aluminium angle, steel/zinc corners, butterfly catch and recessed handles.

You could shave off quite a bit of cash if you wanted to go for a more plain style seat.
I'm going all out for aesthetic reasons. I like the look of a full ATA style seat.

But now here's another question for you seat builders out there...
Why do you get the hinges for a folding backrest?
I can always come up with a custom solution for my own seat but if there are hinges ready out there that will be easier.
