What's your favorite speed picking course?

I feel like after 35 years of palm blocking I need to unlearn that and try something new.

I also play "melodic" banjo, which has some similarities. Years ago I went to banjo clinic where Bill Keith gave a great demo on how he developed his approach. In banjo tab he showed out all possible string/fret locations for each note in a melodic run, then used that to find the single best choice for each note in sequence. This optimized the run for each note on a different string, as well as for fretting economy and right hand pattern "hygiene" (minimizing odd reaching over with the thumb, etc.)

Is there anything out there that would break speed picking down into right hand technique exercises, as well as lay out the musical thinking and strategy on the E9 neck?

Why would you want to unlearn palm blocking? that is what sets greats steel players apart, and thus allowing one to improve speed picking. You don't want your notes to bleed together. I have jeff newmans no speed limit they are good but if you have been playing for 35yrs I don't know if it would really be of any help. also I really want to order All Brisco's Ralph Mooney DVD. good luck

Regardless of the way you block you can improve your technique. I think it is not so muc unlearning as adding variation. I started over with the Joe Wright technical bundle about 8 years ago. This gave me new techniques, repaired old problem, and improved my "palm blocking" as well. Joe's technical bundle is not cheap; but was my best spent money, ever on instrucional material. I may bnefit you to stop thinking about "speed picking" and think about "accurate picking" whne I cleaned up my technique on all instruments, my speed improved as a result.
