I have added a knee lever for the F# to G# on my Mullen and I just got the rod for the second string Eb to E raise. What I am having trouble understanding is, it that lever raises the F# strings a whole step, how would it only raise the second string a half step?

It’s a separate rod, tunable independent of the other string.

I dont see how if the rod and cross bars move the same distance, one string could travel less distance than the other two strings.

I suppose its just the distance between the changer and the metal sleeve on the nylon nut side. I wonder does anyone have a nice all pull parts diagram? It is hard to talk about pedal steel repair as someone who does not already have all the terms down.

There’s 3 raise holes on the changer and 4 or more on the bell crank. Placing the rod in different holes affects the distance traveled. So it’s not the same travel, even though it’s on the same cross shaft. Many variables, including string gauge, affect the travel and amount of tension on each string. I have that same change on strings 1&2 that I accidentally stumbled upon when I purchased a Zum many years ago and the previous owner had it setup like that. I liked it and set it up on every guitar I’ve had since.

Dave’s explanation basically covers it. You are also right about the hex tuner.

You could theoretically raise that string a whole step if you wanted to. Or connect the rod to a lowering hole on the finger and drop the string’s pitch at the same time with the same lever that is raising string 1 to G#.

It’s just pedal steel magic, and I have come to accept it as part of the joy in playing the thing.

Thanks guys! I will experiment with the rod placing. I'm getting it closer now.

Your request for diagrams:

I think that used to be the Carter Steel Guitar website.
