1. Jim Evans built Sho-Bud tube amp w/EVL 15”
Low power monster tone
2. Evans (Hybrid 200 & 300 ) multiple fet500
3. ‘67 and currently-68 dual showman heads
4. Sarno revelation preamp with power amp
I used 2 fet500 Evans stereo and had one for backup in the 90’s
Currently using small cab Evans fet500 and 68 showman head with a 12 year old
Benado steel Dream. |

I have a variety of amps NV112s, Pacer, Fender Twin Tone Master, but I am starting a new once a month sit down gig where I can leave an amp. I am looking forward to dragging out the 70s Session 400 where I don't have to move it. I am sure I am going to fall in love again.

| I'm still seeking my holy grail amp. Of the group I own or have owned the Fender Twin tube version leads the pack. I'm trying to like my Tonemaster Twin as much as my old Twins. |

My first favorite steel amp was a Peavey Session 500. Then a Fender Twin Reverb. Next fave was an Evans LV FET 500. Then a Quilter Steelaire. Now my favorite is the Telonics 500-B with the TT 15.

| My '71 Twin in a head cab into a 15" Peavey/JBL in a closed back cab. Sadly, there are hardly any gigs where I can open up the twin to the volume it requires to really "sing." |

I played through a Peavey Session 500 for quite a few years, then I started using an Eden WT-550 bass amp.
Nowadays when I'm touring I usually ask for a Fender Twin, and most places have the re-issued Twins which I can usually get a really nice sound out of. For other gigs I use the an Fyd head through a 15" Peavey Black Widow. When I record in a studio, I play through the Fyd, and for recording at home, I go direct into my audio interface through the Eden WT-550. I also have a Fox amp that I'm very fond of, but it's a little too heavy, particularly for going up stairs.

The best steel guitar amp that I have played through, hands down, is the Little Walter - PF-89 100w head.
Tone is magnificent and there is clean headroom for days!

| I used a peavey nashville 400 for several but right now I'm using a evans preamp with a lexicon mpx 500 , a rocktron velocity power amp and a black widow 15 inch cabinet that I'm really happy with. |

I have had a truckload of amps and still have a bunch, but I had a '68 Fender Twin that was modified to '67 specs that was probably my favorite, but the older I got the harder it was to carry. That amp along with a white '75 Emmons P/P, I think was the best steel sound I ever got. I'm mostly using a Kemper Powered Profiler with a 15" Telonics speaker these days, and I'm really liking it.

I played through a Nashville 400 from the late 80's through the 90's, but these days I love my Telonics TCA-500 - fabulously featured and lightweight, but with more power than I will ever need !
I have played through Michel Rose's Little Walter PF whilst in Aussie and that was pretty impressive too...

Today's favorite is the Telonics 12" short cabinet combo amp, but my mid 1970's Sho-Bud single channel is the bar that all others are measured. Sadly, I just can't carry it to my jobs anymore because of the weight.

I have owned and played through a lot of different amps over the years. Below are my favorites.
(Earlier playing days):
Fender Vibrosonics
Evans FET 500's with 15" Black Widow speakers installed.
Sarno Revelation preamp, TC Electronics effect unit, Tubeworks / Mosvalve 500 power amp into two cabinets with JBL K 130, 15" speakers.

(Current playing days):
Sarno "Octal" Tube Revelation preamp, Lexicon MPX 1 effect unit into one or two Furlong powered cabinets with JBL K 130 speakers. (2nd speaker option is a pair of Furlong 12" powered cabinets).
Lite weight amps for smaller playing jobs.
Fender Tonemaster Twin Reverb.
Quilter / Travis Toy 12" amp.

I used a Fender dual showman for years and loved it.
Then went to a Session 500 until I couldn’t pick it up anymore.
Then an Evans SE-200.
Now a Quilter Steelaire.
With two hearing aids the amp is not the problem…..lol |

Wow, when I think about the amps I have owned through the years, I am not sure I can pick a favorite. A few I have owned and traded off might rate higher on my list now than they did when I let them go….

Still have a Twin, Nashville 400, neither of which I am willing to cart around, as well as the Evans RE200 and Nashville 112. The Peaveys may not have the absolute best tone, but they have the largest range of usable tones, easier to dial in than the tube amps. |
