I'm having difficulty putting the last two strings on my Sho-Bud. Does anyone have any suggestions?

Thanks in advance.

What order are you replacing the strings in?

One way to replace strings is start with 1st string. Then 10th string, Then 2nd. string, Then 9th string. Alternate till you come to the 5th and 6th string which are mounted at top of key head.
This allows more room to work till you replace the last string.

It is easier if when you open a package of new strings actually make sure the strings are in order by size, And write the string number on each envelope. To prevent cutting a string short and making it unusable.

If you want to replace strings in order.
Replace 1,2,3,4,5 then go to other side of key head and replace 10,9,8,7,6. This gives you more room to work.
Good Luck and Happy Steelin.

Is your Bud one of the later models that have the slots to put the strings in, instead of the fingers with the pins? If so, I had similar issues with the windings being too large to fit in the slot. I took a small screwdriver and very gently wiggled it to open up the slot a little. I had to do this for the 2 bottom strings on the C6 neck of my Super Pro when I had one.

Bend the fat strings at the ball end around your finger and make a C shape, then jiggle him in the slots then pull up, i take it this is C6 strings 9 and 10? Like Rich said, use a screwdriver to wedge them in a bit to get a bite.

I think the sho-bud sets had a 0.66 for a C instead of the normal 0.68?

I know this is more than a year later, but I want to thank all of you who replied. It's good to know I'm not alone with my Sho-Bud challenge. That will go a lot way to bolster my patience at the next string change. Thank you all once again.

which finger style do you have, don? is it the slot or the peg?

either way, get yourself a rubber piano tuning damper. cost is next to nothing. you wedge it in there at the tail to keep the ball end where it should be and then you can wrestle with the peg head end.

hope that helps.

Yes the issue here is not the Ball end, it is the "slot" on strings 10 and possibly 9. The slots are too narrow on SOME changers, I have had this on at least two mid 70's Sho Buds, both Pro III's. The very first PRO III I had used PINS for the ball ends.

Maybe of Ricky Davis , or others in the know are reading , they can 'splain what was going on with those changers that used narrow slots ! Very Happy

Yeah Tony; there is something I've learned about Sho~bud through the years; is: They Made a LOT of updated parts that either made it on the guitar or NOT...and this new Finger-top Design MADE it; simply because they were able to cast a LOT of them quickly(yes pot metal and chromed and Wala; new Finger); but just like anything; there's good things about it and bad things get ignored...LIKE THAT FREAKIN HOOK STRING ON GROOVE!!!!!!ha....LOL.
So follow that link BRINT put up and follow his instructions...that's as good as it gets right there.....GREAT Job Brint.

SHO-BUD owners are not the only 1 with this problem. I have 2 GFI S 12 Universal tuned steels with the same problem.

The .068 12th string is real problem. I bend the ball end till it looks like a --d-- Like Brent's drawing, And use a 4" set of Vice Grips and flatten the winding on the string so it slides smooth in the slot, The ball must seat solid in the slot.

If the ball does not seat solid in the slot, It can, And will move and tuning will change, When least expected, Until it seats itself solid in the slot.

The thing I worry about. If to much pressure is put on the slot, And 1 of the slots fingers breaks off, It will take a major teardown of the CHANGER to replace the broken part.
Good Luck and happy Steelin.
