I know many of you have used these Peavey amps over the years so I'll task your brains to explain the input jack issue. I know Jack Stoner, Bill Ferguson and winston in particular used these years ago...if they remember the connections.
The manual shows A&B input jacks as being TRS type line in jacks for balanced input. These are the only available inlets.
I plan on connecting one of these to a Preamp/MULTI-FX unit that has only mono jacks.
My issue is whether TRS or insert cables are required. I assume not, as I know several of you have had these connected to the Peavey FEX units. I'm guessing one can use the normal 1/4 in. mono patch cables, but I'd like to know for sure.
Also, since the amp's vol. controls are on the rear, do/did you run those fully clockwise?

TRS is a balanced audio connection -- tip-ring-sleeve -- tip and ring are opposite-polarity signals, sleeve is ground -- if you plug in a mono plug, the "ring" input connection just gets grounded to the sleeve, so you are left with a single-sided (unbalanced) input -- you lose 1/2 the voltage (and degrade the signal to noise ratio) and you lose the noise rejection of a balanced signal -- but, it's designed to work fine that way.

| Thanks for the explanation George. So, further, using a TRS stereo type cable to connect a mono source into the balanced input would basically do nothing more than a mono cable? |

Hmm, had to think about this one.
If the source is mono, the "ring" signal will be unconnected and floating -- at the receiving jack, the ring will connect to the negative balanced input -- and this isn't good because that input would see a floating signal -- the result would depend on how the input is designed, the input circuit will end up driving the ring signal in some way -- after some thought, I think I wouldn't recommend this to be safe.
Common sense would say if you have a mono source, use a mono cable, if you can.
You can always try it and see how it sounds.

Yes use mono (Tip/Sleeve) cables unless you preamp has XLR out, then you could use an XLR to TRS cable.
