| I have to say every time I get to hear a Rains it’s just killer tone. Gary Carpenter and Curtis Hogue certainly had something special going, now wouldn’t it be great if their tone secrets were in the hands of a current builder.... not saying the current builders are not great instruments because they are, just different in tone which we all know is our individual taste...mine gets drawn to a Rains |

| Bob Rains is no longer with us. Another man who helped develop the guitar, a retired machinist from Lockheed, was James Foster. He has passed on also. |

I played at Tommy Alverson's Family Gathering on Saturday in Stephenville, TX. This is definitely smack in 'Carp Country'.. Five different steel players, and the score:
Ray Austin - Rains
Scott Jenkins - Rains
Dan Crelin - Rains
Scott Walls - Sho-Bud
Yours Truly - Emmons
Must be something going on with those Rains guitars.. of course all those guys are great players.
I'll refrain from the amp count details, but Quilter Steelaires were in prominence.

Since the subject is Rains I have to show you my Rains guitar.
It was built by Bob Rains with a Mark Giles cabinet.
It was built for a Canadian steeler and I bought it from him.
It is the Rains gospel model.
There is mother of pearl inlay on the front and the fret markers are mother of pearl doves.

Hi Chuck,
You got that right! Rains guitars are excellent. They are
under appreciated and undervalued. Just had my Red Rains,
like yours in the picture, "tuned up" (no pun intended) by
John Widgren, and he proclaimed, it doesn't get any better
than this. Oh, he also said, if I decide to let it go,
please give him, first dibs. Well, it's not going
anywhere, as this is my keeper. I'm glad I was able to get
it from another Forum member. Couldn't be happier.

I do not know sir. Curtis Hogue did own the rights to Rains but have not had any contact for some time now. The last time he and I talked he would still build you a guitar as a custom order. It is sad that he cannot keep carrying on the great guitars. But you have to understand their is not much money to be made on one guitar. Curtis is a good man an a Christian. Besides David Hartley playing a Rains, the late UK
Steeler, Tony Browne, also played a Rains on the last
dozen or so videos, he put on You Tube. Some real nice
steel playing there.

Ben Thomas.....the last Rains SD10 were built by Curtis Houge. He retired from his day job in Texas and decided to cease building Rains SD10 guitars.
We speak frequently via text and FB.
Gary Carpenter was building the D10 Rains but I had heard he was no longer building (not confirmed).
The only way to pick up a Rains is via the used route.
I recently bought another used Rains SD10 from Guitar Sanctuary in Texas and bought the last remaining NOS stock BL705 from Curtis. He indicated then, he had depleted most of his building parts stock.
Hope this helps....the only part I can't confirm is if in fact Gary has stopped building Rains Guitars
