Man, this is awful news. I don't on the forum everyday so I just read this now. It is like a gut-punch.
Stu and I spoke on the phone and e-mailed each other fairly regularly although I hadn't spoken to him in several months recently.
He was just an awesome guy..!! He'd occasionally buy really BIG size t-shirts as he liked them fitting loose and would get an extra to send to me. I wanted to pay him for them but he would absolutely refuse that. Conversations with him were always fun. I will miss him for sure.
My prayers and sympathies go out for Stu, his family and friends.

I'm deeply saddened by the loss of my friend, Stu. Not very shortly after his stroke while living in Alaska, I reached out to him to share my experiences with the stroke I had and that's when we became good friends.
My deepest condolences go out to his family.

I'm so sorry and saddened by this news. I met Stu at the first steel guitar show I ever attended.
Somehow he knew something about my involvement in bicycle design and construction and was literally the first person from the greater steel community to show any interest in me as a person and went out of his way to make me feel welcome. That meant a lot to me and still does.
Super nice guy with an open mind and a deep love of the instrument and music in general.

| Like everyone here, I was so very sorry to get this news. At the height of my steel guitar fervor I went home to Alaska to visit my family. I found that there was a guy there who played steel. I connected with him and I'm happy to have visited him in AK a few times before he moved to NY. Had a great time hanging out with him in Portland for a steel jam. Many emails. Such a kind and generous person - the more I spoke to him the more I realized what a great musician he was. So many great tales. So very sorry about this. |

| I first met Stu at the SWSGA Show in Phoenix, AZ. He was such a kind and soft spoken person. He always came to my set at the show even though I was a club player. We corresponded a lot through Facebook. I bought a Carter D10 from him a few years ago. I will miss him greatly. Rest in Peace Stu. |

Just read about the news today. I met Stu in ‘74 or ‘75 when the band he was with moved to Dallas. Stu had a great spirit and it was always a treat to visit with him.

| I first met Stu here. Someone posted looking for a badge for a Dekley... no longer available. Stu had a Dekley, and offered to help with that. I contacted Stu - I could re-draw the artwork in vector if he could get a good enough image. At that time, digital cameras weren't as advanced or as common as today. Stu put his Dekley on his flatbed scanner and got a good scan. Talking about that in person years later, we were both surprised that the glass didn't break. It was definitely a risk. But that was Stu... a good man who will be missed. |

I am so sorry to hear this - Stu was one of my "under the radar" supporters years ago when I was trying to find ways to play rock and blues on pedal steel and getting pretty well beaten up by much of the traditional sector. He continually told me to hang in there - often with off color and other hilarious comments can't repeat here.
An all around great guy. RIP buddy....

 I don't get on this section of the forum often and just saw this now.....SAD!
I never met Stu but as everyone one has said in all the previous posts, Stu was a great guy. I first met him when he wanted a custom tone bar made. We talked over the years and I asked him if he was playing that Alamo Lap Steel he bought from a guy he knew. He said no, I should give it to you. I said, my wife is complaining now I have too many sitting around and I need to get rid of some. (maybe that was his inspiration?) He says, I am going to send it to you! 2 days later it shows up on my doorstep..........That guy was one of a kind and now when I play that Alamo it will have a very sentimental meaning to me. I will miss shooting the breeze with him. He had some dang good stories. Never met you Stu, but you certainly made a positive impression on all who know you! RIP Stu. Your friend, Bill
Oh. I forgot to mention, the lapsteel came shipped in a period correct hard case in very nice shape.

Bill Groner -- it seemed like Stu often had something happening with you.....trade, transaction, commission. I mainly know your name thru him.
Much time has passed but it's amazing how often something happens that I want to share with him -- I just know it would amuse him. It frustrates me to not have him around. And by 'frustrates', of course 'saddens me tremendously' is more what I mean.

Yes Jon I made those 3. I know what you mean about him not being around. He made a post July 4 about owning a few bars I made on the Builders Corner section and the next day he's GONE! Unreal. I can tell you this Jon, he thought very highly of your friendship and your work.

I haven't used these bars yet, Bill, but I just love the look & feel.
Thanks for saying that, Bill. Yes, I do know how he felt because everyone has told me this. It is humbling. Like anyone, I wasn't 'in it for the glory' (just kidding...) You never think about stuff like that when you go about your day to day life with day to day friendships.
I got a huge amount of satisfaction being able to do these things for Stu.....in exchange for a little $$ & a few dozen eggs from his Betty & Spot, his yard birds.
We were all even, him getting his steels how he wanted them, me feeling good. |

| Stu had seen my post about the bar holder / organizer that I made for myself, and asked me if I could make one for him. Almost all his bars were 15/16". I made it to fit his collection and sent it out to him just days before his passing. I never knew if he had a chance to use it. |
