What’s your favorite PSG tone on a studio recording?
For me it is the track “Just for the Record” from the album of the same name by Bobby Flores. Before I knew who Randy Reinhard was or knew of his “horn of plenty” Emmons wraparound this song and tone stood out to me. This album is filled to the brim with amazing PSG from Randy, Tommy Detamore, Jim Price, Bobby Flores, Gary Carpenter, Herb Steiner, Jim Loessberg, Jerry Blanton, and Dicky Overbey. But for me, the tone on this track stands above the others. When Randy busts in fully at the :08 mark, it’s both extremely beautiful and powerful. My favorite part of the track is around 1:58 when Randy comes in with an ascending two string run with a perfectly placed half-pedal A and then falling back down followed by harmonics that make the hair stand up on the back of my neck.
If I could choose a single tone to emulate or to listen to, this would be it.

Lloyd Green on his solo instrumental version of Jukebox Charlie. If anybody has information to offer about how to achieve this tone, I would greatly appreciate it (1x12, 1x15, 2x12 cabinet?). There's a thickness to it, but it still has some of that scooped/twangy bite.

Buddy on "Ray Price and the Cherokee Cowboys Reunited", especially "Different kind of flower". Weldon on Gary Stewart's "Steppin Out" 1976, especially "Hank Western". Anything by Lloyd with Mel Street. Anything by Pete Drake with George Jones. Any track on Lloyd's solo album "Revisited". "Alberta bound" by Curly Charlker. "I'll come runnin'" by John Hughey.

Yes Thomas; here's a pic of Lloyd and his sound.
That is his '73 Sho~bud LDG with Bill Lawrence 710 pickup; and Blackfaced Fender Twin w/JBL D-130f in Rick Johnson Pine Cabinets.

Some say MSAs had poor tone. I dunno. Curls did pretty well with one on this LP (Experts: WAS this indeed recorded on an MSA? I know he played several brands . . . . )

I think Paul Franklin’s tone on the dire straights record raised the bar for recorded tone. Paul can remain deep in the mix and still have a clear voice.

That's really weird – to my taste, that's the best recording he ever made. Quite far removed from his usual chord jazz (which I admire but don't enjoy listening to) maybe, but there's nothing simple about his playing on these simple tunes... |

Thanks Ricky! I had heard about the Twin with 15" JBL before but wasn't sure if that's what Lloyd used on that particular record. |

I think that it was too commercial for Curly. He preferred C6.

Some people will hate me now, but I don't like the tone of the old MSA's. Curly is the only one that I heard who got an good tone out of it.
The modern MSA guitars sound very good though.

Ben,
Interesting you would mention this, "The Horn" is of the same generation as Weldons Wraparound we used in recreating the ReSoud65, and we were able to compare our first prototype beside the Horn as well, it definitely has some magic not to be found elsewhere.
