GFI Ultra Leg Threads

Hi everyone
I've got a 2016 GFI Ultra SD10. The threads the legs screw into are bone dry. Should these have some grease on them?

I got a GFI brand new, didn’t seem to be any grease on the leg threads. I don’t assume you’d need any.

Bees wax is a good lube for aluminum, And not messy like grease.
I rub a thin coat of bees wax on the threads and the leg shoulder surrounding the threads on both my GFI steels.

Bees wax sounds like a good idea Bobby. I was worried that the grease would inevitably get on my pants and hands and then all over the steel.

Mr Franklin (Sr) once told me to use a small amount of Vaseline on the threads on my Franklin.

My new GFI came with "dry" threads, too.

Vasaline works good. I use it on quite a few things and it doesn't get messy

I use a small dab of chapstick, maybe once a year. Same as vaseline, I think.

we use silicon clear grease, does not require much and lasts a very long time. you could use a hoppie no.9 gun oil, easily removed later, like brylcreem, just a dab will do ya!

In 52 years and 9 guitars, I have never had a need to lube the leg threads, and none of the new one's I bought ever had any on them.

Wax is good! A candle, beeswax, or even a bar of soap works pretty well as a lubricant. (Also works great on the bottom of wooden drawers to make them slide easier Winking

) If you're gigging often, it'll help because the threads in the aluminum endplate will eventually wear and get "sloppy". But, it's not required for a guitar that mostly stays set up at home.

I have never considered it necessary to lubricate the threads on the legs. Rolling Eyes

It does happen! You guys can poo-poo this all you want, but it still happens. Take some time, do a search. There have been numerous threads on the problem, worn leg sockets, wobbly legs, stripped threads, installing inserts, etc., etc.

Yes, I have read a bazillion threads about stripped threads, etc, but don't remember once reading about lubricating the threads. Not one owners manual I have seen says to lube them. Not one new guitar I have received (6 of them) has ever had any lube on the threads. You all can do anything you want. I just don't see the point. I would tend to think the stripped threads has nothing to do with lubricating the threads or not.

I had a used GFI D-10 and the leg threads had been lubricated at some point and I had no problem screwing the legs in when setting up. My new GFI's leg threads are not lubed and its a hassle (at least for me) to get them lined up and threaded in the body. Maybe if they were lubed it would ease setup(?). I'll probably never know since I'm retired from playing out and not tearing down and setting up.

I have a GFI Expo SD10. I have had it for 11 years, gigged a few times. I have never put lubricant on the legs and it still works fine.
