I bought the Roland GP-100 a while back and wanted to give it a try. I read different posts here on tbe forum about how many don’t use the preamp section and just use the effects. I wondering if this will disable my ability to control the gain and eq levels.

For you GP-100 users, or if you use to use one, I’d appreciate any ideas or suggestions on the way to get the best sound from this going to my ToneBloc 202 amplifier

I have a GP-100 and have used it in many applications over the years. Roland stopped making this unit mid 1990's. The reverbs and delays are very nice and although it has several hundred presets I only used a handful. I never cared for all the distortions and buzzsaw patches.

I did use the preamp when I had a rack power amp and the blackface setting was the
one I preferred. Shutting the preamp off does not alter the volume, gain or EQ knobs. I am very bad reading manuals but did get the VHS tutorial on the GP-100 that was helpful if you want to get into the weeds on this unit.

I will mention there is a #2032 battery in the GP-100 that retains saved programs. You might want to check that out as I changed the battery every 4 years or so.

With that said, I think it's a great effects unit and built to last.

I've had one of these for several years. I've always used it as a preamp/fx unit in front of a dedicated MosValve power amp.

As it's designed for guitar, you will likely want to modify or create your own programs. One of the nice things about it is that you can have different settings for different situations. It is completely user programmable on 200 patches.

It is such a powerful and feature loaded unit that I would suggest you download the manual from one of the online sites. I used to use manualslib.com, but recently I've been getting warnings about it being harmful so just be careful.

If the online video is still available as per Lenny, that might be the best.

I have the print manual too if there's something you need.

If I have this right, your 202 is a complete amp unit with preamp , eq etc., so you might try it both ways as just for effects with your Tone Bloc or with the preamp engaged as controller for all the front end.

I use my rig for guitar too, but all my clean presets for steel use the Blackface preamp same as Lenny.

It can be intimidating at first, but with the manual and some experimenting I should think that you will be just fine.

So in summary, Len has pretty much answered your questions concerning how it behaves without the preamp. Keep in mind though, that you have pre and eq encoder knobs at your fingertips if you want to tweak settings on the fly and there is a button on the front panel to switch the preamp off and on.

Like many multi-fx boxes, I've barely explored the massive functionality of this unit because it's just so extensive.

It's a dandy unit. Best of Luck with it.
