I think it's safe to say that the non-pedal steel guitar was not a big part of the Comet's sound but hey - they at least had one in the band. If you look at the many clips on YouTube, the steel was mostly used as a sound effect or for rhythmic stabs. One thing stands out - Franny Beecher was a terrific standard guitar player.

They used it like a horn section which was pretty cool. The earlier version of the band featured more steel.

These guys were great! They sound so much like Billy Jack Wills, I just kept hearing Kissing Bug Boogie. Shows how thin the lines were between early Rock and Roll and swing. Thanks Charlie Christian!

Bill Haley died just a short drive from here, in Harlingen, TX. I didn't even know he lived down here until after his death.
