Does anyone know what sonny Garrish's E 9th copedant is.It's amazing how much this session"master" flies under the radar.I love his playing and would like to know how he has his steel set up.Thanks

A K

It seems like it is pretty straight forward, though he does have two LKL's--one of them drops the G#s to G...

A couple of years ago I was producing a record for an artist and we had a pretty good budget, so I got to hire pretty much whoever I wanted, so I used most of the current A guys in Nashville--Brent Mason on guitar and a day each with Paul Franklin and Sonny Garrish (along with Michael Rhodes, Shannon Forrest, Hank Singer, Chris Leuzinger and Gordon Mote). I wrote all the charts for the sessions, and one very interesting thing I noticed when I picked up the charts at the end of the day was that on one set, there were little snippets of the lyrics written on the charts. Well, these were Sonny's, and he writes them on when he is listening to the demos in the control room so he can add a lick or fill that goes with that lyric. Very nice...

My first intro to Sonny was when he broke out in the mid '70's with Eddie Rabbit, and I became a huge fan. My first Nashville record was in 1982 with Gary Morris, and I played on half the record and Sonny played on the other half. When the record came out, my name was before Sonny's, and I thought I had died and gone to heaven...

A fine player and a true gentleman...

Thanks for your reply John.Fascinating stuff, especially the part about the lyrics on the charts. What a fantastic experience that must have been working with those guys.
If you don't mind me asking ,what was the record you worked on,I'd like to buy a copy.

Hey John, I think Sonny goes back to the sixties with Bill Anderson & the Po'Boys among others. He was also on Bill's old syndicated TV shows if I'm not mistaken. That was all long before Eddie Rabbitt ever came along.........JH in Va.

Jerry--you are absolutely right. Once I found him through Eddie, I bought the Bill stuff, too. I have a PoBoys LP somewhere with him on it, I think doing Soul Country Stew??

Alan, the record was for Pete Martinez and you can get it through his website www.petemartinezusa.com It is the "I Would For You" CD...

FTW: The last Gene Watson CD, "Then and Now", has Sonny

Garrish on steel. Well worth the buy!

I also think Sonny was not only the steel player on tons of records but also the session leader on more than a few. Saw him play live a couple of times on showcases in Nashville.

b0b has Country Soul Stew for sale on the Forum, tape or LP.

My original LP came from Tom Bradshaw's record club in the 70's.

It's all instrumentals. The notes have a lot of Sonny's history, and his copedant at the time was listed.

I always liked this album. One of the tunes, Country Soul Stew, was done including very tasteful use of a wah pedal; one of my all time favorite instrumentals.
