Well, that's not true... What I really wanted to talk about is pulling the 1st string a whole tone on E9th... What can that do for us and why???

Wayne,
It gives you a unison note with the 3rd string, among other things. I had it on my guitars for a while but overused it to the point where I removed it altogether. You hear it on a lot of new country. Used tastefully, it's nice. But that 3rd-1st string unison thing while letting off on the 1st string raise is overdone to the point of nausea, IMHO. I liked raising it in the AB pedals-down position for a more unique-sounding change with licks as well as a Maj. 7th chord. Like I said, I removed it a while back so I wouldn't be tempted to use it; I made myself sick of it. Now I just pull the 1st string with my middle finger when I want a half-tone raise. I'm currently playing 3+2 on a Pro 1 so I'm back to basics in a big way - and it's refreshing. |

Chris, That's another thing you and I agree on!

Paul Franklin has a really nice talk tape about using this change (along with the second string up to E). It will open your eyes to a whole bunch of stuff besides the unison stuff you mention. ![](http://steelguitarforum.com/smile.gif) |

You can get the unoson thing with the 1st string and the C pedal, and if you add the B pedal and the 2nd string lower to D, you can get a very similar lick to that of raising the 1st string a whole tone.

John is right............I have the Franklin instructional stuff for this change as well, and it does give you an array of possiblities for this raise (used in conjunction with the 2nd string half-tone raise, which I find way more useful and tasteful on its own). It's just too bad so many players go there as the "default" lick these days. |

Gives a beautiful high M7 chord w/Pedals A and B. I have gotten fairly good at half pedaling this one. |

Mike,
I tried that alternate change..........it's a beauty, and a whole new voicing on it to boot. Thanks. ![](http://steelguitarforum.com/smile.gif) |
