I know this has been discussed countless times already. I was gifted a rather beat up Special 130 a couple months back. I changed the PS caps, put in the 2134 chips, and a Wheelhouse 150 speaker in it. I replaced the tolex and grill cloth. I have now played 3 gigs with it and am amazed at how fantastic it sounds. It’s a sleeper amp and I would not hesitate to take it to any gig.

Steve, I have the same amp and after the chips and speaker swap it does a fine job.

I've been using a FrankenSpecial 130 for a couple weeks in church. I think it sounds great too!

My Special 130 is housed in a Nashville 400 cabinet and paired with a 1501-4 Black Widdow.

Don, did you put yours in a Nashville 400 cabinet, or did the speaker fit in the original cabinet? I used a neodymium 12 in mine to reduce weight. They are kinda heavy without the weight of that Black Widow 15.

One of these days I need to fix the grill cloth I didn’t get right.

Steve: Nice job!

Larry: The NV 400 cabinet is built for a 15" speaker, so that's what I put in the cabinet. Fortunately, the 130 chassis fit perfectly into the NV cabinet. Since I play exclusively in church, I don't have to move it too often (which is a blessing).

Thanks Don. You might want to try it back in the original cabinet and put in a neo speaker such as the EM 12N or the wheelhouse 150. For years I was a 15” guy but since the N112 came out things changed.

Steve,

I actually have another Special 130 with a 12" Altec Lansing ER 12S. HEAVY but sounds fabulous. But you're right, I'd like to try out one of those Wheelhouse 150s with the hemp cone.

It's fun to experiment!

Thanks Don and Steve. I figured you used the Nashville cabinet. Mine is still a 112 and I used the TC Furlong speaker and it's much better. I may try a Wheelhouse speaker after I do a little work on mine. I considered making a pine cabinet as well, keeping the size the same.

I have two 130s. One in NV400 cab with Eps15 and 2134 chips, and the other stock with an 8ohm Scorpion. Got the stock one for 50$. Gig with it all the time for tele and 10 string lap steel and pedal. Still grab my LTD for pedal steel as it is lighter, but nice to have the Special 130 for back up. Use them all regularly.
