how to change from day to emmons set up

a friend of mine has a carter steel which is set up Day and he is used to Emmons...I have no idea how to change it...if someone could describe the process, I will forward your answer to him so he could do it.

you will have to swap the "A" and "C" pedal rods and all related linkage. It's not rocket surgery and only requires hand tools (allen wrench, screwdriver, nut driver etc.)

1. flip the guitar upside down on a table and protect the strings and tuning machines with a soft blanket or foam pad

2. operate the "A" pedal and observe which rods move

3. operate the "C" pedal and observe whoch rods move

4. make a simple drawing or diagram of the moving parts
(Or take a detailed closeup photo)

5. swap "A" and "C" rods and move linkage in order to actuate the opposite string pulls.

6. You will then have to adjust the hard stops and nylon tuning nuts to avoid overpulls or allow more or less string movement to pitch.

7. don't attempt this unless you are already familiar with
making copedent changes and adjusting string pulls (every pedal steel guitarist needs to learn how to tune and adjust his instrument, as this will need to be checked often)

I would add that it is likely (but not absolutely certain) that the E=>F and E=>Eb levers may be hard to deal with if you just switch the A and C pedals. Typically, in most players' Day setups, E=>F would be on LKR and E=>Eb would be on LKL, or possibly on the right knee. If E=>Eb is on the right knee, no need to change. But if it's on LKL, you probably want to reverse E=>Eb and E=>F.

Now, Jimmy Day actually had E=>F on LKL - see here - https://b0b.com/wp/copedents/jimmy-day-e9th/ - but most players find that an ankle twister when used in conjunction with the A-pedal on the right.

So nothing is impossible, in principle. But I tried that and my left ankle just won't do it without real pain. For Emmons ABC pedals, I need my E=>F on LKL, or I could deal with it on the right knee. I put my E=>Eb lever on RKL.

Also be aware that the pull bars (as Carter called them, some refer to them as bellcranks) have to be moved to be in line with the finger the rod will pull. BEWARE! The screw that tightens the pull bar onto the cross shaft is sometimes really tight. It is a T10 torx head screw. They, as well as the torx wrenches, strip easily. I have stripped many screws and wrenches working on Carters. I suggest buying a couple of good quality (I bought Klein) T-Handle torx wrenches so you can get leverage on it. Those torx wrenches that are "L" shaped are a joke. I also found that tapping the handle a few times with a hammer will make the screw easier to remove. You may have to remove other rods that may be in the way of sliding the pull bars into position, or remove the pull bar from the cross shaft and reinstall in the right location.

And as Dave said, if the levers that raise and lower the E strings are on the left knee, those will have to be changed. Luckily, you don't have to relocate the pull bars to change those.

Just make sure the rods are in the hole in the pull bar and changer finger that they were previously.

All 3 changes ar 2-rod changes. So, your friend has all the hardware to do it.

- Just write up the positions on the bell-cranks and changer,
- de-rod
- loosen the bell cranks and slide them over to the proper position (you can mark over from one cross shaft to the other and
- re-rod according to you chart starting with pedal C, ending with with pedal A.

Carters are EASY to work on.

Yes, the website from the time of Bud and/or John is still there, I think this is your endpoint, for the 3/3 changer. If you have the 4/2 some adaption might be needed (and, yes, be careful with the torx's and check your dogbones still have some meat (heh!) while you're in there.
