Hey y'all - newbie here - pardon my lack of appropriate terminology as I'm absolutely not a music theory expert - but I'm trying to understand/figure out how to play a certain type of chord heard frequently in the early Ray Price recordings.
Figure I'll just point right to what I'm talking about - it's heard on "Wasted Words" right as Ray sings "don't love me..." - 10/11 seconds in - https://youtu.be/cejaevwc0p0?t=10
And also here - right as he sings "to remember" - about 25 seconds in - https://youtu.be/cejaevwc0p0?t=24
What kind of chord is this? And I'm sure there are a million ways to accomplish it but - is there a pretty common change used for this? I feel like I've gotten close - but not quite nailed the sound...
Thanks! |

Travis, it's a very basic and simple pedals A and B on/off change, truly the main sound of pedal steel to the general public.
In the key of F, play Grip 3 (strings 8-6-5) in Closed F position (pedals A+B down) at fret 8, slide up to fret 13, release pedals, then slide up to fret 20, pedals off, then re-engage the pedals to land on closed F, the 1 chord. That's pretty close. In the early days of pedal steel, most of what you heard was just AB on and off.
Have fun. If you'd like some personal coaching and guidance, I teach private lessons via Skype. Here are some referrals from students, most of them Forum members:

Hey John - thanks but what I'm actually talking about is that chord that happens right before that move you're describing - right before the chord progression resolves I guess.
So - also in the key of F - something like: at the 8th fret, a grip with strings 9-7-6. Hear what I mean? |

Sounds like a simple pedals down Bb to open F right at the 7 second mark, right before "you don't love me..." Every lick on steel in this tune is just A+B on and off.
