I bought a badly beat up Dual Pro a while back that was in just godawful shape. Someone had pounded over 100 roofing nails into the side of the fretboard at some point (apparently for decoration?!), the T/V plate was all rusty, the wood was pockmarked, the logo had worn off...but it sounded great.

So, I stripped it...filled the holes, sanded it down to the wood. Then I stained it, replaced the T/V plate with one a found on eBay. Finally, I reapplied the logo and added a light coating of lacquer to seal it (it looks thicker due to the bad lighting).

The only genuine fretboard I could find was from an older model, but I always thought those looked cool, so viola!

Sadly, I ended up having to sell it. I hope wherever it landed someone is getting a lot of joy out of it.

It absolutely amazes me that someone would deliberately damage a guitar like that. Shocked

You certainly deserve a medal for rescuing it.

Thanks! And I know what you mean. When I opened the case and saw it, I felt physical pain.

I agree. Some people are chronic "cobblers". They can't resist taking things apart, cutting, painting, and drilling holes in guitars. Their time would be better spent practicing.

Look on the bright side -- it could have been masonry nails.

Nice work on the rescue, Mark. Personally, I really like old instruments that ooze with patina.
