Frenchy retired so I’m looking for another string brand. I use nickel wounds and use custom gauges. I have not found a pre packed set that suits me yet. I will be ordering about 12 sets at a time if that makes any difference.

Thanks, Bob

Bob,
You can order custom sets from Stringjoy, which I have done with excellent results. I also love NYXL's, but I contacted them directly and they can't or won't provide custom sets.

I often use the bulk strings at juststrings - https://www.juststrings.com/guitarbulkstrings.html

They come in a wide variety of gauges, each gauge 12 to a pack in plastic sleeves, and they are lowest-priced I've found. I like them just fine. I use them pretty much exclusively for nonpedal steel and slide guitar, where I absolutely have to have custom gauges for the various tunings I use. But I have also used them for pedal steel without issue.

They have a fixed shipping charge of $6.95 per order, any size. But I generally order a bunch at a time.

Scott Marquart the man behind Stringjoy. A company of about 6 people last I knew, wrap their strings themselves. I know they buy drawn wire in some form so I don't know if they finish plain strings or not.

Right there in Nashville Tenn USofA. Small company with real attention to quality and variety.

I'm glad to hear they will custom build sets for pedal steels. I have bought guitar strings of various sets, but not pedal steel strings, mof I haven't bought any pedal steel strings in years, but I'll remember that next time I need some.

The baritone set I have is terrific feel and playability.

You might pay a little more, but worth it.

I'd bet if he has enough interest, he would package pedal steel string sets for us.

Here's a little blurb about their process: https://stringjoy.com/making-guitar-strings/

Frenchy's strings were OEM'd by SIT, as I saw posted on the forum.
Just strings sells individual gauge SIT's.

I'm using SIT Sho-Bud gauges on my GFI.
SIT also has Buddy Emmons gauged string sets.

Been using D'Addario NYXL's 12-38 and whatever the C6th gauges are, for a couple years now and love them. They seem to last forever, or nearly so and sound rich and warm.

Shame Frenchy never sold his string business to keep the silent string concept alive. Those were darn good strings.

I've put a few different sets on my guitar. My preference in tone is NYXL > String Joy > GHS Boomer. The boomers have a bunch more string noise than the other two. The NYXL and String Joy are pretty comparable for me. I'd probably mainly use the NYXL, but I use some odd gauges so it's easier and cheaper to get custom sets from SJ than buying a bunch of NYXL singles.

Does anybody make semi-round stainless steel strings? Frenchy had his "silent" stainless strings, and they were absolutely PERFECT for my setup.

I've looked around and found semi-round nickle, or round wound stainless, but never the combination other than Frenchy.

I emailed him about it and he told me "Our strings were manufactured for us, we did not get them from anyone else. The closest thing to our strings might be the SIT Silencer Series strings." If I had known he was shutting down, I would have ordered about 10 sets!

Live Steel Strings for me too! Best I've ever used! There's something different about the tone & feel of these! The late Sid Hudson's company!

I've happily used George L strings for years and years, almost never break, sound great when first installed, not as loud and brash as other brands I've tried. I call them with my custom extended E9 set gauges, and they get them right out in a jiffy. I'm not sure if they even still offer them, and last I checked their website was a complete mess, so I'll call them and let y'all know about their availability. --- Professor Twang

I put a set of the JagWire Tommy White set on my Legrande 11 and loved them. Didn’t know if JagWire was still in business. Ordered bulk strings from Just Stings in the same gages. Nickel Wound and have been very happy with them. Great and quick service.

I like the 11 and 1/2 on the 3rd. The 12 works too and if you don’t won’t to order in bulk the SIT Buddy Emmons set works well for me. Did not like the Dadario NYXL strings. Put nickel on my Sho Bud as opposed to the stainless I had before and WOW!! Bill Lawrence 705 Chrome wrapped. Don’t know who makes these strings but they are great.
