This single 8 Stringmaster popped up on eBay. It has some strange features (to me, a rookie):
1. Anyone know what the rear side cutouts are for?
2. There are extra holes in the bridge plate. Why?
3. Note that the vol/tone pots are wood mount. Was that factory?
4. The 4 bridge anchor screws are missing.
5. The pickup covers are missing.
Thoughts on this 24.5" guitar?

I'm pretty sure that's 1/2 of the top of a Fender 1000 pedal steel, that they threw some stringmaster pickups/hardware on. It might sound pretty good, but definitely not worth what a deluxe 8 goes for. |

Those cutouts are for the 1000's neck selector switch and vol and tone controls. They just drilled some holes for the ones they have on there now. |

Edited: Ha! You beat me to it Ethan!
1. Anyone know what the rear side cutouts are for?
-Your guitar was originally the upper neck of a multi-neck guitar and the cutouts were for the controls that sat in between the necks. It seems to be a bit of a frankenstein. The cutouts and color say it was part of a Fender 1000 but the bridgeplate and pickups seem to be for a Stringmaster.
2. There are extra holes in the bridge plate. Why? They are mounting screws for the plate, but I'm not sure about the three on the lower end.
3. Note that the vol/tone pots are wood mount. Was that factory? No - they were moved to that location when the necks were separated.
4. The 4 bridge anchor screws are missing. Yep
5. The pickup covers are missing. There was no pickup cover - only a bridge cover.
In summary - I think it is the top neck of a Fender 1000 that was separated and retrofitted with Stringmaster parts. Here is a photo of my 1000 showing where the controls that would have sat in the cutouts. You also see the three screws at the end of the plate that match up with the three screw holes in the wood of your guitar.

Fender Stringmaster Single 8 Steel Guitar. This guitar started as a 1962 Fender 1000 pedal steel guitar. When I found it , it was just the body and fret board . 24 1/2" scale . I took about a year collecting the proper parts to make it a Fender Stringmaster Hawaiian , 60's Stringmaster tuners and tray , 60's Stringmaster mounting plate for pickups and bridge , 60's Stringmaster chrome nut , 60's Stringmaster bridge cover , Affinity Stringmaster pickups (new) , new Fender pots , new chrome input jack . Fender Stringmaster legs and 60's Fender Stringmaster leg mounts . Sorry , no case . However , a Fender Strat case does fit the steel guitar . This is a very solid Stringmaster made from a Fender Pedal steel . Pretty much a ' One of a Kind ' . No International bidding or shipping . |

And a wildly ambitious price too. |

Without those four screws (and the wood that goes beneath them) this guitar will have no sustain. IMO junk. _________________ New FB Page: Lap Steel Licks And Stuff: https://www.facebook.com/groups/195394851800329 |

How about this one?
Quirks:
* 1 piece mahogany 1000-ish body
* Tone knob on side (no route for tone on top)
* Telecaster control plate
* Early 50s tuning pans |

Anthony- that looks pretty cool. I wonder where the old 1000 parts are. I could use some! _________________ KEVIN MAUL: Airline, Beard, Clinesmith, Donner, Evans, Excel, Fender, Fluger, GFI, Gibson, Hilton, Ibanez, Justice, K+K, Live Strings, MOYO, National, Oahu, Peterson, Quilter, Rickenbacher, Sho~Bud, Supro, TC, Ultimate, VHT, Williams, X-otic, Yamaha, ZKing. |
