Might be a dumb question, but what is the "carryover on/off switch used for on a DD-8 delay pedal?

This is called "trails" on other delay pedals. Say you have the pedal on and it's generating delays from your playing. If the "carryover" switch is OFF, the delays are cut off immediately when you hit the foot switch. When "carryover" is ON, the delays that are sounding will trail off (decay) naturally after you hit the foot switch, although no new delays are added.
