For such an expensive unit that's been around forever, it seems odd that I can't find a single audio demo of it with a steel guitar. Can anyone point me to one?

That should tell you something! IMHO, if the amp is set properly, it's very difficult to even tell if you're using one. These units were very popular in the '70s and '80s, but most players I've seen that use them these days use them primarily for their distortion capabilities, or for the tone control.
