I made a prototype of this idea a bunch of years ago, but anyone is welcome to use it.
Let's say you have a change that you want to disengage, instead of unscrewing the plastic tuner, just push it and it disengages. Click again and it's engaged. Think ball point pen.
This also minimizes wear on the plastic tuner threads .

I'd love to see a diagram of how that worked Chris. I know Buddy had a similar device on one of his guitars that engaged or disengaged a pull by rotating a rod 90 deg (vs. pushing on it). There is a post from the late Hook Moore about it here: https://bb.steelguitarforum.com//viewtopic.php?p=2861098#2861098

That's cool Buddy did that. I didn't know.
Remembering the first prototype, I took a plastic tuner, and made it so when I rotated it, it made the rod become disengaged.
When I get a chance to dig through storage I'll look for them.
I think most people stick to the copedents that have, and would not have a need for it. I remember thinking about the possibilities for C6 and universal tunings for extended Jazz chords.
I haven't looked at the possibilities for E9, but with the most people playing single necks, this idea would work well to bring some more C6 flavors to the E9.
Unless one is soloing or in a duo or trio, I see no need for bass strings

It would be really handy on my D6th. On C6th, a lever lowers the high root tone C to B. On E9th, a similar lever lowers both root tones E to D#. I have both rodded on my D6th. I disengage the lower one when I know I'll be playing a lot of western swing. It would be great to be able to do that quickly between songs.

following...

I've managed to achieve the same 4 chord/5 bass that Buddy achieved on his Zumsteel with the special gizmo Bruce Zumsteg came up with, but I raise my extended E9's string 11 G# up to B, omitting string 10's whole step raise which was defeated by Buddy's custom knob. I'd love to do that in a simpler way without having to use my pedal 8 to get that change, Chris.
