Just powered up my older NV 400 and it has a loud “POP” when first switched on.
Could it need connections cleaned or something else?
Any advise will be helpful.
I will check in next week after my trip.. Thanks Kevin

There is also that loud Mid-Shift pop.
That one will give you a heart attack and make your ears ring. |

The “Peavey Pop”….
Just turn your master and volume to “0” , and power on. You’ll eliminate the loud pop. |

I always have my volume off when powering up and it still pops. If I have the volume up, it might pop louder, but I never have either pre or post gain up when I turn the amp on. Every NV 400 and I possibly my Session 500 always popped.

At my last gig, I moved my mid-shift and it scared the living daylights out of the guitar player who was near my speaker at the time.

If you ever get a no signal or flakey signal and a popping and crackling when you bang on the amp to make it work, it's generally the reverb connector at the back of the amp, pull him off and on a few times to clean off the corrosion on the pins.
All the NV's pop on power up.

| My '77 LTD 400 has always emitted a loud thud when powered up, no matter how the volume pot is set. It's been running for about 45 years now with no problems (aside from blowing out its factory JBL early on). |

The 2 NV400s and Session 500 I had popped. I also had A Studio Pro 50 that popped. I also had a first generation Session 400, but don't remember if it popped. Bass player I played with had a Peavey bass head (don't remember the model) that also popped. We used to joke about it.

Class A/AB SS amps 'pop' when powered up because either a) there is no circuit to prevent it or b) the prevention circuit is faulty.
The pop happens because the +- power supplies are coming up to final voltage and they hardly ever come up at the same rate... any difference between them will appear (transiently) on the output. Some amps use soft-start on their power supplies, making a soft 'thump' instead of a 'pop'. Some amps have 'crowbar' circuits on their output to short or disable them during this (or other failure) periods.
If you're in a situation where a pop must be avoided, you can disconnect the speaker, power the amp, then connect the speaker back up. Otherwise Peavey owners just expect it. It's not particularly good for tweeters... so amps that use tweeters tend to have the protection circuits... or just use piezo tweeters.
Switching amps (class D etc) don't have this problem, the power supply regulation is essentially part of the final amp.

I was told that the pop is the capacitors discharging. I have one 400 and two Session 500’s and had another 400 and a Bandit and a Backstage in the past. Every single one popped upon powering up. Normal trait of Peavey solid states.
