A friend recently acquired an early Fender lap steel.
It's in need of some of brad nails for the fingerboard. Anyone ever done any repair/restoration work using these? I'm trying to find out what size they are and where they might be found for purchase.

They usually have a round head, fit in the hole in the fingerboard, and are 1/4 to 1/2 inches in length. Either steel or brass.

Those holes look like they have been made large -- too large for the heads of the original brads. Maybe it is just gunk surrounding the holes? Send me a private message. I have those but they come with fretboards.

Thanks for the info Chris. I checked with my friend and he found something he’s going to use. The guitar is in rough shape and he’s not going to restore it, just play it as is.

The original brads are chased after by guys restoring old tweed amps. But replacements are readily available from places such as McMaster Carr etc.

Jack, how rounded were the heads of yours? Did they match the drawing provided by McMaster?

They're at home in Colorado, and I'm presently visiting my dad and sister in Arizona, so I can't dig 'em out for a photo at the moment. But if I recall correctly, they are extremely rounded on top -- nearly a half-sphere.

I used 'em for position marker dots for the knobs on a couple of rescue Gibson lap steel bodies, where their high dome shape was not an issue. If I were to use 'em to attach a fretboard, I'd likely grind the tops down a tad, and polish 'em out first.

So what is the spec of those brads? I need to order some. A link maybe?

Thanks!
