For those who might not have seen these smaller Reverb Tanks.

I finally got my first up close look at these shorter smaller reverb tanks. These really don't sound a lot different then my other amps with the longer tank. I do notice that the "Tail" of the reverb, doesn't trail as long as the larger tank. But they're a strong tank, like they're big brothers.

I've seen a bunch of small tanks, but mostly in smaller cheaper combos.

What's the origin and/or destination for that tank?

I have changed out a few of these small tanks, the full size MOD always sound better to me. Even my Music Man with the O C Electronics, "manufactured by beautiful Wisconsin girls" sounded better with a full size MOD replacement.

The tank i pictured above, is manufactured by Accutronics, MOD & Ruby also build a version of this exact tank.
It's not (in my case) a matter of what sounds better, it's a matter of room. If you're gonna play drippy Ventures style Surf music, then you may just need one of Ken Fox's fantastic custom built Reverb Systems. I have these short smaller tanks in my Rivera, Brunetti (Italy), Victory V40 (UK) Dr Z, Fryette. They all sound to me, as good as any Fender stock reverb system and better then any Peavey that uses a full tank. I don't cake the Reverb on, just a tad, tad of delay as well.

Here's what James Pellington from Victory Amps wrote and told me a long while back. I also was curious at the time, about these smaller tanks.

Dear George,

You would be correct, I don’t think that the V40 Deluxe can fit a long reverb tank in the wooden head, as the V140 Super Duchess is the only head we produce which is large enough for the longer tank.

The short tank has 3 springs arranged in a triangle, the long reverb tank has 4 springs that are connected in the middle to make 2 long springs. These are sometimes sold as “2x2” spring tanks.

At Victory, we use Ruby spring reverb tanks, these can be found in a lot of production Fender amps.

The shorter reverb tank has a shorter decay time by maybe a second or so, the strength of the reverb level is determined by the circuit, which is identical in both your V40 Deluxe and the V140. George, you will have more reverb then you can possibly use on your slide steel guitar.

If there’s any more info I can provide you with, or if you have any other questions, please let me know!

Kind regards,

James Pellington

Several years back another country guitar player asked me to "fix" the reverb in his Blues Jr. I installed a long delay Mod, by mounting the tank on an angle, (Screwed one end to the cab wall).
I later picked up a BJ in a friends barn, fixed it, and used that tank in it, the person that bought it thought it was great! We all have our own perceptions.

I have always preferred the sound of shorter tanks; they're smoother and less splashy.

This thing uses the same short tank that FINO installs in their Blues Juniors, and in my opinion it sounds tremendous:

I just bought an Accutronics, (short tank) 8AB2D1A, Medium Decay, 3-Spring to replace the dead one on my JC-120. Cost me $30 bucks, and it's awesome.
