What would you do with a 12 string extended e9 guitar?

I have a Moyo extended e9 12 string (4 and 5) that I like the tone of and size a lot, but I’m just really not feeling the tuning and the pedals.

I’m considering selling it to get a nice non pedal or console. But in the interim, also considering retuning it and disconnecting the pedals.

What would any of you do in a similar situation?

I could conceivably do a 6,8,10, or 12 tuning on it.

I could do two stacked 6 tunings making the most compact console ever.

Just looking for ideas.

You should sell it or trade it for a console of equal value. What kind of steel do you think would fill your needs / wants?

If you like the string spacing, and want to keep it, maybe put some version of non-pedal E13 on it. I have been fooling with a 10-string E13, as well as a couple versions of the 8-string tuning. It really comes down to what you expect out of the tuning, the kind of music you want to play.

I removed the pedals from a Sho~Bud Maverick (10-string) and tuned it to E13th when I played with The Stringbusters.

E G# B D E G# B C# E G#

With a 12-string, you could add the so-called "chromatic strings" from the pedal E9th. It would give you really easy melody runs on the high strings.

E G# B D E G# B C# E G# D# F#

Bobby Black plays an 11-string C6th that's worth looking at. Expanding it to 12 would add the low C.

The top 2 strings are re-entrant, like the pedal steel E9th.

I'm a D6th player. Here's what I'd do (11 strings)

D G B D F# A B D F# C# E

You could add a middle E to that, but I wouldn't.

Here’s a stacked tuning I thought up that might be fun and useful. Stacking D6 over G6

GBDEGB D F# A D B D

Open contiguous strings give you G, G6, GM7, GM9, Em, Em7, Bm, Bm7, D, D6. String 6 pitch could be above string 7, or below it.

I wouldn't sell it if I were you.

Don't disconnect the pedals - Just don't use the pedals
Tune it to whatever tuning you want (E13 - by far has the most playable voicings IMO)
Then when you master it no pedals
Step on the pedals and expand it even more with your sound knowledge of the fretboard
You'll be miles ahead of everyone who simply relies on pedals

if you dont want to use the pedals thats fine...but...the knees are still there and you can make great use of them. i see no difference in a non pedal steel with up to 4 palm levers and a now non pedal steel with 4 knee levers.

just think more chords than licks with the knees. set them up to get chords that are hard to come by....diminished, augmented etc.

Your E9 pedal steel already is in at least two different open tunings. E(strings 34568+10,11,12 then add #9 to make E7) and B(strings 1257+10), for starters. Try looking at it that way.
