Looking to replace the '705's in my Williams with either 'Truetones' or 'Alumitones' (have both). Any members running 'Alumitones' in their Williams, if so, your impression?..Thanks.

I have an Alumitone on my keyless 700 uni 12 and it sounds really transparent if you're after a clean "hi-fi" sort of sound.

Changed a Truetone for an Alumitone a few years ago in a Williams SD-10 great improvement in tone for me.

I bought my Williams with an Alumatone installed and I had a really hard time getting it to sound good so I swapped it out and now its my #1 (currently has a Telonics pup installed)

The last gig I played before the big shutdown was with Eric Heywood on the bill and he had an alumitone in his williams and he was playing out of the same Milkman amp that I use and it sounded awesome... so I think its going to vary player by player

It didn't work for me, but it worked for him and we both had the exact same steel and amp. Isn't that helpful?!? Very Happy

In the parallel universe of brass instruments, there's no point getting the same mouthpiece as some player whose sound you admire.

You have to find the one that gets that sound for you
(assuming it's attainable Smile )

If you have both you can get your own impression in just an hour or two.

Fred..In the case of a single neck guitar, I would tend to agree. But being that the pickups need to be wired to a micro switch with extremely small posts and due to my basic soldering skills, will most likely have them professionally installed.
Tim..In total agreement. Purchased both my Williams and my Show Pro with 'BL 705's installed and cannot find a tone that I like on either guitar. Have heard other players who use those pickups and they sound great.

I like mine a lot, I generally use a generous amount of EQ with it (essentially a smile curve). It's great for recording, very clean output.

Here's the one steel instrumental (swing) I've recorded with it:

And a country tune:

Sorry I'm late to the party but I was searching for information on Alumatones and landed in this thread only to be blown away by Slim's playing/recording. Great Job!

What Slim has inadvertently proved is that when you listen to good playing you find yourself listening to the music, not thinking about pickups. His purpose was to demonstrate an Alumitone but he didn't really succeed! Smile
