I have a friend with a Zumsteel who broke the 3rd string. He didn't have another string to replace it with so he kept playing for some time with no 3rd string. Now he's hooked a new string on and when he hits the B pedal nothing happens to the third string. The sixth string still raises but the 3rd doesn't. I haven't seen the steel in person so I can't say what may have happened. But does anyone have any suggestions on what I should tell him to look for or what he should check? Thanks

Chances are the pull rod popped out of the bellcrank for that striang.  |

Erv has the obvious idea but if that is not the case it sounds to me that the string finger could have jumped behind the finger that activates it. He can tell by looking behind the changer and see if the roller that the string is attached to has rotated counterclockwise, bottom end kicked out of position in the changer. He would need to loosen the string, probably detach the lower return spring and push the pivot point back far enough to allow the string finger to be moved forward in front of the part of the finger changer finger that activates it then put the spring back on and tune the string.

| Erv, I'm curious. I've never gotten a look at a Zum undercarriage. How would it be possible for a pull rod to pop out of the bell crank? Are the bell cranks similar to the ones used by Fessenden (I think of them as "comb" style) where the pull rods go into slots instead of holes? |

| Brint, yes, the old Zum bellcranks were center-pull combs. The new ones are side-pull with holes. |

David is right.
I just acquired an '80s Zum and the pull rod has a little pin in the end and it just slips into a slot in the bellcrank. Some of the pull rods on the guitar have an Emmons allen screw collar on them by the bellcrank to help hold it in place. |

It is a newer Zum. I've yet to find out what the problem was but I'll let you know as soon as I talk with him.
Jack, I figure if I just ask on the forum I'll get some good suggestions. I'll leave Bruce to building guitars. If I found out is was something that wasn't "user" error or if it was major. Then I'd stop in and ask Bruce for guidance.
