Happy New Year to you all!
I am learning the 6 string C6 tuned Lap Steel. I am using 3 fingerpicks but see most players seem to have only 2. Should I do the same?
Also I am at the stage of needing advice on various points. Whom could I contact for tuition.
I am in New Zealand and there are not many steel players around.
Thank you.
Paul Shannahan.
Sorry; 1 more thing. Where can I get the Harmonized Scales from? |

Both! 3 picks makes a lot of wide grips easier if you're on 8 or 10 strings (or more!), 2 picks lets you do the Buddy E damp/mute with ring finger thing

and yeah some 2 fret back slants, not my favorite thing... https://www.planetgaa.com/C6/C6Harm.html

Paul, I'm not sure if this'll work for you but it's the cheat sheet I use.

I feel like two fingerpicks and a thumbpick is going to be the default for most folks (especially with a six string). Nothing preventing you from using three though! Andy Iona, who lost his right thumb, used a third fingerpick (maybe put on reversed?) as a way to strum the strings like you would with a thumb pick. Just a note of advice from my experience as a beginner...don't fall into the trap of always going for the most harmony/biggest chords by default (just because you can hit four notes in the chord doesn't mean you should)...sometimes keeping things to single notes or doublestops is better for the music. There are songs I arranged that I've deliberately dumbed down since, because even though the chords sounded cool, it got in the way of the melody line a bit.
Depends on the style you want to play, too. If you're interested in Hawaiian style Alan Akaka is the man and the time difference for lessons might not be too terrible from NZ to HI. Troy Brenningmeyers videos would also be a good resource. _________________ Waikīkī, at night when the shadows are falling

Pedal player here, but I love 3 finger picks + thumb. 4-note chords without the strum! Catching high strings with finger 3!

Switch it up! see what works best for yourself. I don't think there's any wrong or right way. When I play with my band I often switch during a set between finger pickin, using a guitar pick, and just using my fingers. And I bring a lot of extras a long with me...easy for them to fly off if you're not careful! It sucks because the ones I love are my Landis ones, but too expensive to keep losing.
My house is a finger pick graveyard. My cats love them and thwap em about, and more often than not they get stepped on. And I find em in the weirdest places!
Sorry for the ramble, but I guess what I'm saying is get one of those big tubes, they're not that pricey, and play all different ways. I've used 4, but I found I really don't need to.
I'm also not that great so don't listen to me too much I'm probably one of the least talented steel players on here, but I learned how to get by with not a lot of talent! _________________ -Gibson EH185-Rickenbacker Silver Hawaiian-Melobar Powerslide 88-Fender deluxe 6 - Bronson Melody King -Fouke Industrial Purple Menace-Hudson Resonator lap thing-Vega something or other- |
