Is it really as easy as pulling the screw ends and trimming the leg tube? Trimming and threading the rods is easy peasy, no big deal there. I am curious as to what stumbling blocks I'm not seeing in cutting down the legs themselves however.
I'm the kinda guy who likes to learn from other's experiences before I stick my finger in the light socket.
I'm looking to shorten the legs on my older BMI if that makes any difference. I've been using an old piano bench but ahve dome to the conclusion that I need a little lower seating position and corresponding lower cabinet height. Guess I'm shorter than the average PSG player. |

Knock out the plug on the upper end, cut off however much you want and put the plug back in.
To knock out the plug, slip a dowel in the leg and pound it on the floor.

I’m not much of a craftsman so if I can do anybody can! And I have a couple of times since my guitars are1” shorter than standard.
If you have access to a bandsaw you’ll probably get a cleaner cut but it’s not necessary as a hacksaw will do it. Fortunately the lab at my office has a bandsaw. Knock out the plug insert as Erv instructed.
It’s also easy to cut the rods. A cheap tap and die set from Ace Hardware or wherever makes extending the thread on the cut rod easy too.

A few tips that may help: Rather than a hacksaw for shortening the legs, I would recommend a three-wheel tubing or pipe cutter (such as plumbers use), your cut will be much more accurate. Place a section of masking tape around the area that you intend to cut, mark the spot and use that as a guide, helps minimize any flaking chrome. Once you have shortened the first leg, I would use that as a guide to mark the others to ensure that all are the same length.
Prior to shortening pedal rods, screw a nut onto the threads before cutting, when removed it will help clean the thread ends. A small file should remove any burs. |
