Topic: Stool/chair for short lap steel player? |

| While waiting on my bullet bar to arrive, I’ve been messing around on my single cone with a bottleneck slide. I have found that I am too short to use any chair or stool I have without propping my feet up on something in order to level my legs so that the guitar doesn’t slide off of my lap. Has anyone else faced this problem? If so, might you be able to recommend a chair or stool? I believe that I am 5’ 6” if that helps at all. |

I have exactly the same problem and usually have my instrument on a stand.
Music stools and drum thrones are all too high and are made for sitting at keyboards, pedal steels or drums. I have wondered about the kind of folding stools used by anglers but haven't looked into them yet. |

I got to thinking that maybe a step stool would work? I just found this 13” step stool (among others) online:

I'm 5' 7" and my computer chair is at 16". My legs are level. Your mileage may vary.

The lowest chair I have is too high. It comes in at 18”. I don’t wear shoes in my house. So, that might make a little bit of difference too. Ideally, I would like something a bit more portable than an office chair. But, I’ll keep that in mind. |

My neighbor is in the process of moving. She told me if there is anything in her garage I want, take it. She had one of these and it measures 15". I will go out and sit on it later and let you know what I think of the height.(legs straight) It has trays that would be useful for strings, picks, cables, tone bars, etc.

Sat on it, my legs are straight. I'd say 15" to 16" would be fine for you.

| An adjustable drum throne will lower to the point that your knees are in your chest (not that you'd want that, but they'll certainly get low enough to level a steel). |

Thanks for the suggestion. But, I’ve already tried two different keyboard benches. Even at there lowest settings they were both too high. The one that you linked only goes down to 17-1/2". That would be too high as well. |

I have have a Gibraltar drum thrown. It actually doesn’t go very low at all. I think most drum thrones only go down to 18”-19”. Is there a drum throne that you could recommend that goes lower? |

Have you looked into the SoundSeat? Each seat is built to order after a phone call with the owner. You can tell her what you need and she will fit you up to a proper-height chair and build it. My seat has the medium back and foot ring for playing Spanish style guitar. Though I am 5'9", I have short legs so I got a shorter gas lift and can sit with my feet flat on the ground and have my upper legs horizontal so neither Spanish style nor lap steels slip off. They offer five lengths of gas lift:
A side effect is that the ergonomic design of the chair absolutely takes back and butt pain out of the equation. I was born into a DNA line with absolutely no backside padding. Wood chairs extract a toll. I have also dealt with lower back pain. With the SoundSeat I can play sessions forever. Your back and butt will thank you. Oh, and the seat covering is breathable leather.

Perhaps a regular folding chair with the legs cut down? Some of them have a fair bit of run between the crossbars and the bottom of the legs.
If it doesn't have to collapse, there are thousands of options for chairs that can be cut down.

I actually looked into those a few years ago. Unfortunately, they only come in leather. And, I won’t buy anything made of leather. I would also like something that could be folded up and put away when not in use. I live in a tiny space! |

That might be the way to go. I was already thinking about cutting down a stool that I have. |

I have used a pnumatic mechanics stool with a foamed coverd seat from Harbor Freight.
It's on wheels and can be stored nicely in a corner of the room.

Have you tried a drum throne? They are very comfortable and usually adjust very low. Check out the drum department at you local Guitar Center,
