Watched some of the Hall of Fame show on PBS - inductees were Lucinda Williams, Alejandro Escovedo and Wilco. Lloyd Maines played some really lovely steel in the house band. I was really impressed with how well he fit in with Wilco - they are a tight unit and he sounded like he was in the band - so tasteful!

Watching now... love his style.
I met Lloyd Maines at a gig in about 2000 or so... said, "Hey, I just saw you on ACL." He said, "Yeah, I think that was my 21st time on that show."
He probably owns the record among steel players for 'most appearances' on Austin City Limits. Well done, ma man! |

If I recall correctly, Lloyd Maines was the steel player on Wilco's first album, A.M. "Dash 7" is a particularly excellent example of his playing... it's mostly a steel feature.

Correct! And also the last Uncle Tupelo album. Jeff Tweedy mentions this on the show, it’s a really nice moment:) |

Lloyd also plays on Jay Farrar's Son Volt, which I think are similar if not from the same era.
Lloyd is my favorite player, the Joe Ely Band and The Maines Brothers Band are top notch.

Jim,
Check out his playing with Joe Ely, 'Live Shots' was a great album when they toured with the Clash. Most other early Ely albums are full of great playing by Lloyd.
Lloyd can rock out with the best of them!

I met Lloyd in the early 70’s at the Broken Spoke in Austin , he was playing with Marcia Ball a friend of me and Jeff Johnson a guitar player I’ve worked with on and off for close to 50 years. Lloyd was kind enough to let us sit in but he was light years ahead of me then. I was fortunate enough to play with a Maines Bros drummer for over 15 years Mark Gillespie. Great drummer and for some reason I’ve been lucky to play with some really good ones.
Lloyd is a great steel player, producer, multi talented musician. |

His 60 licks in 60 minutes DVD (I think that's what it's called) is pretty fun. He's a funny guy, to boot.
