I recently picked up a vintage Echoplex EP-2 tube type tape delay in need of repair. I was wondering if anyone had had any experience with the online shops that do these repairs. I am in the Birmingham Al area and have no shops that have any desire or experience with these units.
Thanks in advance for your comments.
Thanks again

The unit powers up and the motor turns the tape. I have tested the tubes and they test good. The belt pully seems to be rubbing the metal bracket it is mounted to making a metal to metal rubbing sound which may indicate the need for new motor mounts.
The main issue is there is no sound transfer from guitar through to the amp. The guy I got it from said it belonged to his dad and was found in storage after his dads passing he had no Idea what it was or how long it had been since it last worked. I think a full restoration will be needed.

If the unit has been sitting for a long time I would suggest cleaning the record and playback heads. Take a Q-tip and some alcohol and VERY GENTLY rub the gunk off the heads. DON'T push too hard for risk of scratching the heads. You should notice that there is a "black line" or two on the heads. These are the what you want to clean off. It make take several attempts to clean it off.
My reasoning for this is that as the tape moves across the head(s), it deposits some of the iron and coating from the tape on the head. This builds up over time if the heads aren't cleaned regularly while in use. If it hasn't been cleaned, and then allowed to sit for "years" then this build-up could cause either the record head not to magnetize the tape, and/or cause the playback head not to "read" the tape. Or both.
Good luck. You should also change the tape while you're at it. _________________ "The secret to a long life is to keep breathing." |

The black stripes are the "business" part of the heads. They do the recording/playback. The rest of the head is the magnet. Be gentle. You can get a 90% alcohol at a drug store. (My wife uses that for her painting.) Take your time. _________________ "The secret to a long life is to keep breathing." |
